When I was born, my mother became seriously ill

When I was born, my mother became seriously ill. She was unaware that she had given birth to a baby, and she lay in the hospital, near death, for a year. Different remedies were tried, but all proved useless. Since nothing more could be done for her, she was released from the hospital and sent home. Our minister's wife came to visit and was shocked to see that my mother, a young woman in her twenties, was in such a state. She told her about Christian Science, for she knew of its healing power. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and after months of consecrated prayer and study there was a beautiful, complete healing. Mother became a devoted student of Christian Science, living the truth she had learned in this religion and bringing it into our home. This happened over forty years ago. This healing Christ has continued to bless me and my family since that time.

In my years of employment as a physical education teacher, Christian Science has been a constant help to me. I have experienced good health and have always enjoyed participating in sports with the boys and girls.

One summer, while I was playing tennis, I lost my balance and fell. At first I was unable to stand on my left leg. I sat silently praying the Lord's Prayer, holding to the truth about myself as an idea of God, unfallen and upright, knowing that I could stand in the strength of Truth. I was able to finish the tennis game. Later, however, the knee continued to trouble me. Someone expressed the thought that it might be dislocated. This alerted me to do more specific prayerful study. I was to play in a tournament at the end of the next week. Working with the Bible and with Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I looked up references on "man" to rid my consciousness of any false suggestions of a counterfeit man made of matter, bones, sinews, and other material elements and to have only a clear picture of God's man—spiritual, perfect.

I used a passage from the Christian Science Quarterly Lesson-Sermon in thinking of the approaching tournament:"For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me" (Job 23:14). I played that match knowing that my only desire was to express the qualities of God through right activity, skill, and good fellowship. I felt a sense of joy and gratitude to God for all the good He is constantly giving to all His children everywhere. The fact that I won the match was secondary to the realization that this was another proof of the practicality of Christian Science in my daily living, There has never been the slightest difficulty with my knee since then.

At another time, with the loyal support of a Christian Science practitioner, I was able to meet a problem in human relations that proved to be a very challenging and humbling one. The practitioner insisted that we were not coping with false personal traits but with impersonal evil or error. He asked me to study and ponder Mrs. Eddy's statement in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany until the truth of this statement was revealed to me. Here Mrs. Eddy says (p. 220): "Each day I pray for the pacification of all national difficulties, for the brotherhood of man, for the end of idolatry and infidelity, and for the growth and establishment of Christian religion—Christ's Christianity. I also have faith that my prayer availeth, and that He who is overturning will overturn until He whose right it is shall reign. Each day I pray: 'God bless my enemies; make them Thy friends; give them to know the joy and the peace of love.'"

I memorized and prayed with this statement until it was a part of me. The problem didn't resolve itself overnight, but through days and months of watching my thought, of replacing error with truth, resentment with love, unjust and impure thoughts with just and pure thoughts, the situation righted itself, and the outcome brought peace and harmony back into my home.

Over a year ago my husband's company offered him a new position. Through trust in God our house was sold in two weeks, and each step of the move was beautifully taken care of by divine Love.

Through class instruction I gained a completely new and fresh approach to my study of Christian Science. I am indebted to Mrs. Eddy for providing this teaching for our spiritual growth, and for her unselfish devotion in presenting Christian Science to the world. I thank God for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, who awakened man to his true nature as the son of God.

I am happy to verify my sister's testimony about my mother and her own healings. I was eight years old when my mother's healing took place, and remember it very well. I was immediately placed in a Christian Science Sunday School, and my sister was enrolled when she became of Sunday School age.

I wish to express my gratitude for all the healings we have had through the study and application of Christian Science and for Mrs. Eddy for giving this Science to the world.
