Reasoning from Cause to Effect
Reasoning from cause to effect in Christian Science, we begin with the great and only cause, the infinite and omnipotent Mind. The Scriptures inform us that "all things were made by him [God]; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men." John 1:3, 4;
Divine Mind's infinitude precludes the possibility of an effect from any other cause. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." And she adds, "In reality there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality." Science and Health, p. 492; The terms "mortality" and "mortal existence" express a mistaken, false sense of existence. Any attempt to reason from what appears to the material senses to be mortal existence or matter back to cause is incorrect. Such attempts end in frustration and erroneous conclusions. A right beginning is requisite for a right ending. Mrs. Eddy writes, "You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being." p. 403;
True being, or spiritual existence, and self-deceived mortal existence are foreign to each other. They do not cooperate or contribute in any way the one to the other. Mortal existence and matter and the so-called mortal mind are inseparably one. Specifically, mortal mind is the satanic liar, the anti-Christ. Its false beliefs and its seeming effects are nonintelligent, the contradiction of the intelligence and wisdom of the divine Mind. Hence they are unreal and unreliable, because there is no invariable rule, law, or Principle to support them. When this is seen and understood, there is no reason to believe or fear them.
On the other hand, if we reason from the infinite and omnipotent divine Mind to its effects, we arrive at the fundamental and invariable truths of God and His spiritual creation. To properly evaluate spiritual existence, we obviously need to understand the nature, essence, and allness of the great and only cause and live in accord with this true view of being.
Mrs. Eddy in a few words, gives us the true basis for this understanding. She writes, "To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is." And a few lines down the page she continues: "Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—that is, all power, all presence, all Science. Hence all is in reality the manifestation of Mind." p. 275.
In the degree that one accepts, comprehends, loves, and adheres to the absolute truths contained in these words, he will demonstrate these truths, step by step, here and now. Thus he will prove the unreality of any supposed cause or effect opposed to the divine Mind and its manifestation. Is it not reasonable that one should think and live the truths of spiritual existence that he may recognize and claim his divine sonship and heritage? It is imperative also to know that divine Mind is Love, the Father-Mother of all individuals, and that He is universal and impartial in His care for His own.
Our all-knowing, all-loving parent Mind forms, animates, constitutes, and governs His own unerring and perfect ideas. Creation is the expression of this infinitely inclusive and immortal Mind. Therefore the universe including man is wholly mental, spiritual.
Humanly we need to let go of the false beliefs of the carnal mind— deny, reverse, and replace them with the truths of the divine Mind, the facts of spiritual existence. Thinking and living the facts of spiritual existence promote the demonstration of spiritual power. They bring into action the power of Life, Truth, and Love, which give man dominion over all the earth. Reasoning from the divine Mind to its manifestation in Science, we grow Spiritward and better understand that all men have one Mind, one God, and are included in Mind's infinite self-containment. In Truth they possess and reflect every attribute, every idea, of this unerring Mind. Hence man is not a sinner or a frustrated mortal, subject to the mesmeric suggestions of animal magnetism, or the carnal mind. He is the blessed child of God, upright and pure, expressing the Christ.
Let us be joyous in the truth that God and man, Mind and its idea, have always existed—preexisted—as one, as cause and effect. This is scientific reasoning, the truth of God and man.
