The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy...

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized" (Science and Health, p. 167). It is a joy and privilege to testify to truth of this statement.

One day, several years ago, while I was trying to lift a very heavy object off the ground, there was a grinding sound and a feeling of shifting at the base of my back. I was able to get into the house but seemed unable to move without pain. The thought I immediately had was that whatever the condition might be I wanted to rely solely on Christian Science for healing, and I began to pray concerning the condition.

Several days went by with no change for the better. I was still unable to move my arms or legs without intense pain. Knowing that the healing truth is an ever-present fact, I prayed for enlightenment, for divine wisdom to unfold what I was not recognizing in the application of Truth. As the Psalmist said (Ps. 18:6): "In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice." Almost immediately came a thought spoken by one of the members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship concerning the healing of a friend who had had a bone out of place in her foot. The idea I had recalled was substantially that Life is not in bits and pieces but is one all-inclusive whole.

As I was pondering this fact, the word "structural" came to my thought. With the aid of the Concordance I found a statement of Mrs. Eddy's in Science and Health. In speaking of Like she writes, "Therefore it is never structural nor organic, and is never absorbed nor limited by its own formations" (p. 309). Since God's creation is intact and changeless, I realized that dislocation could not affect it. It was also clear that no change needed to take place in the body, no waiting for bones to shift back into place. My only need was for a change of thought regarding the body, an awakening to what body really is and the fact of its changeless perfection. With the realization that the oneness of God's being is reflected as the oneness of my being, I felt an overwhelming sense of God's goodness and great peace, and at the same time freedom from all pain. The healing was immediate and complete.

This had been another opportunity to prove that no matter what the situation seems to suggest, we can reach out to God with complete trust and confidence. What beautiful lessons are ours when we learn to trust divine Mind's directing in every circumstance!

I am increasingly grateful for the joy, peace, and contentment that complete reliance on God has brought into our home.

It is a joyous privilege to verify the healing described by my wife. This experience was proof of the ever–present healing power of God.

I became interested in Christian Science through my wife, and I am now a member of The Mother Church and a branch church. I am very grateful for this comprehensive religion, which can be fully utilized in all daily activities.
