New Bottles for New Wine

Christ Jesus said: "No man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved." Luke 5:37, 38;

The new wine he spoke of is spiritual understanding. It is the understanding that individual man is spiritually mental and expresses qualitatively the infinite individuality of divine Spirit, Mind, his creator. This right concept of man, expanding in human consciousness, displaces and destroys the false belief that man is physically circumscribed, self-created, and limited in all respects. One must beware of trying to bottle this right idea in material concepts, in the old man and his outmoded ways. The intake of new wine in Science through the unfolding of spiritual reality in one's consciousness has the natural result of forcing a change from the old man with his sensual deeds to the "new man"—the image of God, of whom Paul wrote in Colossians (see Chapter 3:10).

That such a result must be the inevitable consequence of spiritual growth can be seen from Mrs. Eddy's comment on Jesus' parable: "Divine Science does not put new wine into old bottles, Soul into matter, nor the infinite into the finite. Our false views of matter perish as we grasp the facts of Spirit. The old belief must be cast out or the new idea will be spilled, and the inspiration, which is to change our standpoint, will be lost." Science and Health, pp. 281, 282:
