In July, 1939, I suffered a sunstroke...

In July, 1939, I suffered a sunstroke, or heat exhaustion, while playing tennis. The symptoms associated with this condition recurred each summer. The illness manifested itself in a high fever every day during the summer until the cooler fall weather relieved me. Weakness accompanying the fever incapacitated me for the summer. Confinement in a hospital for observation and tests proved of no avail; the doctors could not even diagnose the illness. Apparently the sunstroke had damaged the temperature regulating mechanism of the body, and my body temperature rose with the outside temperature.

After several summers of this illness I moved to California to try a change of climate. While I was in California, my mother, who had become interested in Christian Science through a friend's recommendation, sent me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I began to read this textbook, began attending a nearby Christian Science church, and was healed of the smoking and drinking habits.

The hot weather illness afflicted me, and since I was new in Christian Science and unsure of its healing ability, I was prevailed upon to go to a hospital for treatment. My family was notified, and my mother came to bring me home as soon as I was able to travel. I was still ill, however, and my mother asked me if I would like to try Christian Science treatment. I agreed and was completely and permanently healed after two weeks of treatment by a dedicated Christian Science practitioner. Ever since then I have enjoyed indoor and outdoor sports, summer and winter, without a trace of the previous symptoms.

I was healed in 1946 of a sprained ankle I experienced while playing basketball. I could not stand on the ankle because it was swollen and painful; so I phoned my employer and informed him that I would not be able to work for some time. I then called the same practitioner and experienced an instantaneous healing. I was able to report for work just one hour late. I was able to walk without pain and without a trace of limp. Both the pain and swelling had completely disappeared.

I am grateful every day of my life for Mrs. Eddy, who established Christian Science. I am also grateful for our practitioners, who are always ready to help us when our own understanding of God and of Christian Science is apparently not sufficient to effect a healing.

I should also like to express gratitude for our periodicals, class instruction, the annual association meeting, membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and the privilege of serving as First Reader in a branch church.
