This testimony may be of benefit to someone who knows of...
This testimony may be of benefit to someone who knows of the writings of Mrs. Eddy but who still seeks persuasion before accepting the truth they contain.
Science and Health, translated into my native German language, was given to me almost half a century ago by a friend who felt my need. The literary style of the book greatly interested me, but I was not convinced of its healing message. Not until many years later did the words "Christian Science" become meaningful. I had then acquired the smoking habit and was full of self-condemnation for being in bondage to it One day I came face to face with Christian Science literature distribution box. An article in a Sentinel therein carried the message, "cease struggling." The very words planted in me the determination to become an earnest student of Mrs. Eddy's writings.
Much control was needed. The use of cigarettes and strong drink ceased, but other errors were more obdurate. One was doubt. Had Christian Science healed me of the tobacco and liquor habits or would they have left me sooner or later anyway? Here again was "the old man" (Eph. 4:22) trying to delay my progress, although not for long.
For years I had been plagued by attacks of backache that periodically incapacitated me. One day it was impossible for me to move about. I called a Christian Science practitioner, and with his prayerful help I was completely well within forty-eight hours.
More than twenty years have gone by since this healing and the difficulty has never recurred. All doubt about the truth of Mrs. Eddy's teachings and their practicability was gone. I had proof of her statement (Science and Health, p. 217), "When you have once conquered a diseased condition of the body through MInd, that condition never recurs, and you have won a point in Science."
Much good has come to me since the encounter with me literature from the distribution box, and I gratefully acknowledge the part of these boxes in our movement. Gladly I also recall the first time that I became acquainted with the translated version of the textbook. Its inspired messages had left their imprint in thought. They prepared me to accept and to apply the truth which Christ Jesus, our Master, taught.
My gratitude goes out to God for Mrs. Eddy, who taught us how to look at this world through the eyes of Love, and also for our teachers and practitioners. Through their efforts we often gain the understanding which we can utilize for our demonstrations.
