Gaining Dominion over Age

The divine method of gaining dominion over age is touched upon by Zophar when he says to Job: "If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; if iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.... And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning." job 11:13, 14, 17;

Dominion over age is attainable now through understanding the truth of man and living in accordance with that truth. Mrs. Eddy writes; "The measurement of life by solar years robs youth and gives ugliness to age. The radiant sun of virtue and truth coexists with being. Manhood is its eternal noon, undimmed by a declining sun." Science and Health, p. 246;

The meridian of perfect manhood dawns upon us as we cultivate and cherish qualities that come from God, such as beauty, purity, humility, spirituality, love, and obedience. We should never supinely acquiesce in the false belief that the noontide of perfect manhood, which neither waxes nor wanes, is eclipsed for a time by the inanity of infancy, the timidity and turbulence of adolescence, the often unearned and therefore untenable dominance of a so-called prime of life, and the incapacitating changes of senescence. We are never too old or too young to gain dominion over age. Mrs. Eddy unequivocally states, "Man is God's reflection, needing no cultivation, but ever beautiful and complete." p. 527;

In his resurrection from the grave and his final ascension above all materiality Christ Jesus furnished indisputable proof of man's eternal perfection, exempt from age. But Jesus did not wait until the crucifixion to begin his spiritualization of thought, or resurrection from the belief of life in matter. Throughout his ministry the Master radically obeyed the practical precepts that purge human consciousness of materialism. To his disciples he declared, "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch." Mark 13:37;

Constant watchfulness for the continual unfoldment of Love, Truth, and Life impels unswerving obedience to divine law. This watchfulness brings regeneration, or spiritual development, which dispels the belief in material life and decay. But forgetfulness or lack of watchfulness, unresisted and undestroyed, lapses into inactivity, narrowing horizons, deteriorating health, and incurability. Thus through apathetic omission of positive obedience to divine law, or sinful disobedience thereto, one may become so mesmerized with despair that he may even believe himself to be cast into a dark midnight without a ray of hope for recovery.

But let each one consider that God, good, who is infinite Light, never made darkness, evil, whether it is termed curable or incurable. The Bible emphatically states, "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." I John 1:5. Aggressive mental suggestion of an opposite to God's eternal perfection and allness or to man's reflection of that perfection is never true or real. Age, with its helplessness and hopelessness, is neither a lack nor an accumulation of years, neither a void of inexperience nor an aggregation of solved or unsolved problems. What we call age is but a set of false beliefs. Therefore it can be progressively overcome by the spiritual understanding of man's completeness as the expression of God, eternal Life.

When the unobstructed radiance of Truth, Love, and Life shines in human consciousness, good is revealed as omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient. Then the possibility of attainment or recovery of spiritual treasures hidden by mental darkness becomes apparent.

Gaining dominion over age involves maintaining individual faithful watchfulness for correct views of growth, restoration, and renewal. The demands for improvement of our bodies and lives are fundamentally spiritual demands, not material. Continual watchfulness—prayer, right reasoning, and devoted obedience—is the unceasing source of hope, refreshment, and deliverance. Heavenly inspiration reveals that the ageless individuality of every spiritual idea, forever beloved, exists in divine Mind, complete, and unchanging.

Through the unparalleled accomplishments of her long and successful career Mrs. Eddy has set before us the vast potentialities of dominion over age. But infinitely more than this, through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration, the results of her tireless, watchful effort, the full-orbed day of Christian Science dawns upon mankind: the illumination of Truth heralded by the morning star of Christ Jesus' ministry.
