The Continuity of Being
The Preacher declared; "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it.... That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past." Eccl. 3:14, 15;
Christian Science, which is in perfect accord with the Scriptures, declares that the origin and continuity of all true being is in the self-existing and self-revealing divine Mind, or God. The infinitude of Spirit precludes the possibility of another creator or creation. Spirit, God, made all that was made and called it good. He made man in His own image and likeness and gave him dominion over all His creation. Because Spirit is substance, the continuity of all that really exists is ensured.
In Science man is ageless, having neither beginning nor end. Mortality is a myth, a false belief of the carnal mind, which claims that life, substance, and intelligence exist in and of matter. Paul says, "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace," and, "The carnal mind is enmity against God." Rom. 8:6, 7;
Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated the continuity of being by overcoming sin, disease, and death. He emphasized the eternality of the Christ in his words, "Before Abraham was, I am." John 8:58; When he was transfigured, Jesus enabled those who were with him to identify Moses and Elias. These had passed on or had been translated centuries before. Our Master gave further proof of the eternality of Life by his resurrection and ascension.
The healings of Jesus and the demonstrations of Christian Science prove that divine Principle operates throughout all time. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The operation of this Principle indicates the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being." Science and Health, p. 123; Jesus' ministry fulfilled prophecy and established a basic fact of Truth: Life is God, Spirit, without beginning or end.
The demonstration of endless life is an individual responsibility. Paul says, "Every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour." I Cor. 3:8; One's basis of reasoning must be spiritual if he is to perceive and experience the unfolding of Life as it eternally is, forever harmonious. One's responsibility is to learn more about God and to realize that man is God's reflection. This correct reasoning enables one to become better acquainted with his true selfhood as God's child.
In the ratio that an individual understands and lives up to his highest sense of divine Principle, Love, he reverses the false beliefs of mortal mind and progressively utilizes a higher spiritual sense of perfect God and perfect man. The material senses cannot perceive the things of God. One's thinking must be in harmony with his all-knowing Father-Mother God if he is to prove "the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being."
A few years ago mortal mind beguiled me into believing that I was not the likeness of God. The physical manifestation was a pressure at the base of my neck, which resulted at intervals in an inability to think and act coherently. This experience gave me an opportunity to examine my reasoning and prove that man is spiritual and perfect. The false claims of mortal belief were cast out of thought as unreal because unlike God. I rejoiced that man's true selfhood cannot change or be changed, that it was, and is, and ever will be God's image.
When I realized this marvelous truth, it resulted in an immediate and permanent healing. My memory has been better than ever before, and my mental processes are more acute. This demonstration has strengthened my conviction that all true being is limitless, timeless, and invariably good.
Christian Science points the way out of the darkness of mortal, or carnal, beliefs regarding life, and leads into the clear day of harmonious and permanent existence. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Life is eternal. We should find this out, and begin the demonstration thereof. Life and goodness are immortal. Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, freshness, and continuity, rather than into age and blight." Science and Health, p. 246.
Instead of struggling to hold fast to the material sense of existence, let us deny every thought that is unlike God and strive to realize the perfection and continuity of God and His creation. Let us not accept as real anything about ourselves or others that misrepresents or dishonors our all-loving Father-Mother.
The truth that man is God's own image and likeness is fundamental in Science. One must hold fast to this truth and demonstrate it step by step. As one does this wholeheartedly, he progressively experiences the continuity of true being.
