Divine Law Is Positive
Law is defined as "a rule of conduct or action ... recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority." It is also defined as "a divine commandment or a revelation of the will of God." As law usually implies imposition by sovereign authority, we may say that divine law refers to the laws or statutes imposed and enforced by the authority of God. Since God is constant and unvarying in nature, as Christian Science teaches, His law is also constant and unvarying.
There is never a question that a mathematical law, once understood and proved, can be repeatedly applied. If a mathematician fails to get a right answer, he realizes that he has made a mistake by not adhering completely to the mathematical law involved. He therefore searches for his error and corrects it to obtain the proper answer. When it comes to divine law, there is a tendency to question the law or even to blame it for our failures, though Jesus proved that divine law supersedes all other law and is infallible.
What is the divine law to which one must be obedient? Divine law is God's will. In Christian Science we know God as Love, so the law of God must be the will of Love. An incident related in the Bible brings this out clearly. A Pharisee who was a lawyer asked a question of Christ Jesus, "tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus replied: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hangs all the law and the prophets." Matt. 22:35–40;
Christian Science teaches that since man is the image and likeness of God, he is the image and likeness of Love, for God is Love. Therefore, it is natural for man to express Love, natural for him to be obedient to the demands of Love, and therefore natural for him to be obedient to divine law, to cherish divine law, the law of Love. We bring the law of Love into operation in our present human experience by letting a spiritual sense of it fill our hearts and govern our every action. Obedient to divine law, we shall be able to have the positive results which Jesus achieved. However, if we allow a little fear or doubt to enter our thoughts, we are not obeying the divine law of Love. We read in the Bible, "He that feareth is not made perfect in love." I John 4:18;
Adhering strictly to spiritual means for healing, we grow stronger in our ability to demonstrate such unfailing results as Jesus experienced. An absolute love for God accepts God, Spirit, as the only power. Jesus demonstrated the omnipotent power of God by overcoming every obstacle through spiritual means alone. Turning to other than spiritual means is accepting another power besides God, and therefore it nullifies to some extent our ability to demonstrate the all-power of God. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." Science and Health, p. 167;
The study of Christian Science reveals the many ways in which error deceives us into deviating from an absolute love for God and our neighbor. By allowing ourselves to be selfish, impatient, irritable, uncharitable, depressed, or dishonest, even in small degree, we adversely affect our ability to demonstrate the positive, unfailing nature of divine law. On the other hand, as we bring our actions into line with an unwavering love for God, as we desire to express His qualities in every situation, we increase our ability to prove the power and infallibility of divine law in our present experience. In expressing God's qualities, we relate human consciousness to the divine. Mrs. Eddy says, "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 160;
At one time the author felt that he was about to be discharged from his position because of favoritism and a ruthless, high-handed attitude on the part of his immediate superior. Since he had been successful in this position for some time, he felt that the actions of his superior were neither justified nor fair.
In an effort to adhere as closely as possible to divine law, which he knew would afford him the protection he needed, the author filled his consciousness with a deep sense of love. He also was grateful for the opportunity this problem gave him to demonstrate divine law's positive healing power. He impersonalized the error by seeing it as no part of the man God created, and he endeavored to rule out of his thinking all resentment, fear, discouragement, and depression. Knowing himself as in reality God's likeness, he then acted as possessing all power, assurance, and peace. This left nothing in consciousness to react to error. The author was not discharged, but in a short time was offered a different position in another division of the same company. The new position proved to be a great blessing and gave him greater opportunity for advancement.
As we properly apply divine law to our daily problems and bring our thoughts and actions into conformity with its demands, we rule out chance and uncertainty and bring into our experience a positive sense of peace and joy and an enthusiasm for doing that which is right, that which expresses God's love. This spiritualized sense of being benefits our bodies and uplifts our entire human experience. Mrs. Eddy states, "Spiritual living and blessedness are the only evidences, by which we can recognize true existence and feel the unspeakable peace which comes from an all-absorbing spiritual love." Science and Health, p. 264.
