My heart overflows with gratitude to our Father-Mother God...

My heart overflows with gratitude to our Father-Mother God for the wonderful blessing of Christian Science, which I have enjoyed since early childhood. Two years before my birth my mother was healed in Christian Science of a fibroid tumor which two noted physicians said would cause her death within two months if she were not immediately operated upon. They also had said that she could never have another child. My mother was healed and spent many active and healthy years as a Christian Science practitioner. My father also became a Christian Scientist.

When I was four years old, I was ill with diphtheria. As my father was searching the Scriptures for the light of Truth, a wonderful unfoldment of God's law came to him, and I was immediately healed.

When I was about eleven years old, I was instantaneously healed of a severe attack of asthma. I had previously been quickly helped through several lesser attacks. When it seemed impossible for me to struggle further, my father handed me the Christian Science Hymnal opened to Hymn No. 312 and asked me to read the hymn aloud. I resented this request; but I had been taught to be obedient, and so I read,

Soldiers of Christ, arise,
And put your armor on. . . .

When I was using a wringer-type washing machine, my hand was caught in the wringer; and after extricating the hand, I put both hands behind me and walked the floor declaring aloud, "the scientific statement of being," which begins (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." Within ten minutes all pain had subsided, and I was able to complete the washing. Although my hand and arm were discolored and swollen up to my elbow, I had not the slightest discomfort. I went on a garden tour the day following, completely free.

Another time I injured my toe. The pain was intense; but I immediately declared the truth and denounced the error, and the next day I was able to wear my shoe and walk normally. However, I did not seem to overcome the swelling and discoloration very well, and because the toe remained tender to the touch, my husband, not a Christian Scientist, wanted me to have an X ray taken. I consented, knowing that all was well, and the picture showed the bone had been split lengthwise in two places but was healing perfectly. How potent is Truth!

I give daily thanks to God for His Word as revealed through Christ Jesus, for the wonderful, unselfed love of Mrs. Eddy, and for the disciplining instruction of my dear parents. Also, for the devoted workers in The Mother Church and its branches wherever they are, my gratitude is unbounded. In the words of a hymn (Hymnal, No. 224),

Henceforth my great concern shall be
To love and praise Thee more.

I had been suffering from a sinus condition for more than a year. I had become deaf in one ear and was told I would soon be deaf in the other car. After receiving medical treatments three times a week for over a year and undergoing several operations, I was given up as an incurable case and told that if I expected to live I would have to go to Arizona. This was impossible, since I had just been working a few years, and most of my money had gone to pay for medical bills.

In my dilemma I talked to an aunt who recommended I try Christian Science. She herself was not a Christian Scientist, but there was another aunt in the family who had had some wonderful healings through her study and application of Science. I then got in touch with this aunt, and she told me to purchase a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and to study it every evening when I came home from work. She deeply emphasized the fact that I must not think about my problem but must try to gain some understanding of what I was reading in Science and Health. Since I was desperate, I lost no time in getting a copy of the textbook, and I proceeded to follow her instructions.

In a month's time I was completely healed; my hearing was restored, and a noise that had been in my head had disappeared. I knew nothing about practitioners at that time, since no one had called them to my attention. The healing, which took place over thirty-five years ago, was brought about solely by my reading the textbook, and the condition has never returned.

As I continued to study, I soon realized that if I expected to enjoy my freedom, I would have to watch my thinking. I had permitted thoughts of resentment, rebellion, dislike, and so on, to take possession of me, not knowing how to handle them. But now, one by one, all of the false qualities were overcome and replaced with the true qualities of love, purity, and patience.

I am very grateful for this healing and for the many others which I have experienced through the years. For membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, as well as for class instruction, which has given me a better understanding of God and man's relationship to Him, I am most grateful.
