RADIO PROGRAM NO. 221 - God's Law of Healing
Announcer: In spite of today's emphasis on physical laws and the physical sciences, a number of physicians and clergymen are giving increased attention to the non-physical side of healing. Maybe you yourself have wondered if there isn't an underlying basic law of healing that is higher than physical laws.
Questioner: I think most people would agree that there are ways in which God helps healing. But I'm not sure that they can visualize a specific law of God that actually heals by itself. I'd be interested to hear your views on this.
Speaker: As we see it, God's law does more than just help healing. The law of God is a law that heals every ill whether of mind, soul, or body, and it rests entirely on the supremacy of God and not on mere human theories.
The Bible brings this out. It's on this basis that Christ Jesus turned the fearful thoughts of those around him away from material so-called laws to acknowledge the presence and power of divine law. For instance, when his disciples asked about the man born blind, they said (John 9:2), "Who did sin, this man, or his parents?" Jesus answered (John 9:3), "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."
We can see from this that the supremacy of God and His law was the basis on which he restored the blind man's sight, and it's on exactly this same basis that Jesus healed disease of every kind.
Questioner: Precisely what manner of law is this? Where is this law of God that is capable of healing?
Speaker: This law of God is everywhere. Wherever we are, this law of God which applies to healing is available; and it is applicable to any situation.
The nature of law, of course, is to govern, and this is certainly true of God's law, the ever-present law of unchanging health and harmony. But this law isn't a formula like a law of physics, for example. It doesn't depend upon changeable human opinions like a mere statute or civil law. It's a power. It's a specific force.
Questioner: A force? That's a new concept to me—that a law is a force. It is not merely a statute which one recognizes and therefore breaks or adheres to?
Speaker: No, it's a specific force. As a law student, one of the very first things I was taught was that before any rule or statement can become a law there must be some authority to enforce it.
For example, if I announced publicly that everyone had to wear a blue suit, people would just laugh and call it nonsense, and they'd take no notice of it because it has no authority behind it. But when the government says that all men serving in the Air Force must wear a blue uniform, that's different. Behind that regulation there's authority. When we turn to the law of God, we find that this law, resting as it does on the supremacy of God, flows from God's allness and is backed up or enforced by God. This law is the law of divine Love, because as the Bible tells us (I John 4:8), "God is love." And so this law is a law of all-embracing goodness and gentleness and harmony.
Questioner: Would you say that God's law is the means of His governing, the means of His bringing about His desired result?
Speaker: This law is His means of governing creation. The Apostle Paul said (Rom. 7:14). "We know that the law is spiritual;" and, of course, this law of God must be spiritual because God Himself is Spirit. And so it's understood in Christian Science. It's the law of infinite Spirit, the law of divine Principle. And because it's the law of divine Principle, it operates without flaws, without change, without limit.
In one of her writings, Mary Baker Eddy explains the nature of God's law in this way (No and Yes, p. 30): "God's law is in three words, 'I am All;' and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law." These three words bring out the supremacy of God's love and power over everything unlike Himself. For example, because God is infinite Life, He's the source of all life, health, and being. He includes no destructive element. Since God is the only power, His law must correct disease, stoppage, and inactivity. Because God is divine Love, He's the giver of all good and of good alone to man. He can't possibly be the author of evil. So God's law must be and is a law of elimination to sin and suffering.
Questioner: Perhaps somebody is bewildered or afraid or in need of physical healing. How can such a person get hold of this law?
Speaker: First of all, he has to acknowledge that this law exists, that it's present. Then he needs to know himself as God really made him. He must recognize that he's God's spiritual likeness and not a helpless mortal.
Now, the law of God the law of good, is constantly imparting to man the freedom, joy, and peace which are his by divine right. Healing results from yielding to this law by realizing the omnipresence of God and the supremacy of His law. But we have to wake up to see that what's really governing and controlling is the law of God.
Questioner: How does this work? Has it ever worked for you?
Speaker: In our family we've seen many instances of the operation of this law of Love—in business, at home, in social relationships, and in physical healings, too.
One night when I was away on a business trip, one of our daughters came down with an acute stomach difficulty. My wife was wakened by the child crying out with pain. My wife reminded the girl that God's law was right there governing regardless of the evidence to the contrary and that disease and pain are not supported by His law, by true law.
The girl explained that this condition had been going around at school. People had said that she would probably be the next to get it. It was some form of contagious illness.
The two of them discussed the Lord's Prayer, especially the phrase (Matt. 6:10), "Thy kingdom come." The very word "kingdom" signifies law, signifies a rule, a reign. My wife explained to the girl that this meant the law of God and that God is the only lawmaker; therefore there is no other law. They saw that divine law overrules and annihilates any false, so-called laws of disease.
My wife continued to affirm these spiritual truths and deny the appearances, and the pain and discomfort were quickly relieved. The child awoke the following morning completely well and full of joy and was able to go to school as usual.
The child herself recognized that by seeing that there is only one lawmaker, only one law governing her experience, any effect of another so-called law just couldn't stand in the presence of divine Love.
Questioner: So you trust your understanding of God more than any man-made mandate or law?
Speaker: When an individual's consciousness is gratefully acknowledging the supremacy of God and His law of healing, there's literally no room left for any other so-called law. The deeply Christian basis for obeying law in this way is indicated by the Master, because he said (Matt. 5:17), "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."
