In the Bible we read (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This passage had a wonderful meaning for me about three years ago when I severely injured my finger. The nail was knocked off, and the flesh appeared to be smashed and the bone damaged. I quickly covered the finger with my hand and declared truths from the Christian Science textbook. Science and Health by our Leader.

After washing the finger I called a practitioner for treatment. She quoted from the textbook (p. 424):

"Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony.

"Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection."

In the same book, under the marginal heading "Growth is from Mind," we read, "Here is the emphatic declaration that God creates all through Mind, not through matter,—that the plant grows, not because of seed or soil, but because growth is the eternal mandate of Mind" (p. 520). "The emphatic declaration" refers to the account of God's creation of every plant of the field and every herb of the field "before it grew" (Gen. 2:5).

I kept the finger bandaged and only changed the outside bandage when necessary. Each day the practitioner gave me encouraging thoughts and references. This healing extended over several weeks, and there was a great deal of pain during the days. However, I slept soundly every night. The finger lay limp in the palm and could not be straightened out.

One evening I noticed that the back of my hand had become a fleeted, and I became alarmed. I called the practitioner, and she gave me the passage already quoted from John. From that moment on, there was steady progress. Gradually the pain lessened, and the finger gained a more normal appearance.

One day, while about my housework, I noticed the finger was strong and could easily be moved. I was anxious to look at it, but the practitioner had reminded me that patience must "have her perfect work" (James 1:4). She also gave me this reference from page 261 of Science and Health: "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality."

One morning I awoke to realize that during the night the bandage had dropped off and revealed a beautifully healed finger with an entirely new tip of flesh grown back on the end of the finger. In a very short time the nail grew back, and the healing was complete.

I am deeply grateful for this healing, for the many blessings I have had through the study of Christian Science, and for the practitioner who stood by me through this trial. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for Christ Jesus and for our beloved Leader's revelation of Christian Science to the world.
