When our elder daughter was...
When our elder daughter was in her first year of high school we lived in a small town in the Sierras of California, where my husband was teaching in the high school and junior college.
Almost simultaneously both our daughters experienced a symptom which was apparently that of a contagious disease. In accordance with the law I notified the health authorities, and the school nurse, who was a good friend of ours, was sent to us. She said the condition was scarlet fever, necessitating our being quarantined.
My husband was given permission to move into the school dormitory with the Air Corps trainees. (This was during the Second World War.) The next morning the quarantine sign was put on the house for a period of three weeks, and during this time neither of the children was sick, but played around the house and yard.
However, the day before the quarantine was lifted, the elder daughter became very ill, and her father was permitted to return home. During the next twenty-four hours we had to work constantly in Christian Science against what seemed to be the last enemy, and a practitioner in a distant city was called to help us.
For the next seven weeks one ailment followed another in our daughter's experience, and when poliomyelitis developed I became quite fearful. We kept the school nurse informed regarding developments. Through the work of the practitioner and our own prayerful efforts to see the nothingness of the entire experience, our daughter steadily improved until, because of her pleading, she was permitted to return to school, although her movements were still not coordinated.
One night when I went to bed I started thanking God that our child was still with us and that we still had the opportunity to work out her complete freedom. In fact, I was so filled with gratitude that I lay there with tears rolling down my cheeks. Finally I slept. The next morning our daughter did not appear until the rest of us were seated at the breakfast table. She opened the door from the hall and came striding across the living room with her old swing and vigor.
I whispered to her father, "Do you see what I see?" His answer was, "Yes," and I can tell you it was a great time of rejoicing for us all, for she was completely free!
One of the illnesses she had had reappeared some years later after she was married and had children of her own, but it was entirely eradicated through steadfast reliance on the healing efficacy of Christian Science.
There have been many physical healings in our family, but the above experience has been a beacon of inspiration to us all. I cannot express my adequate appreciation for the testimonies that constantly appear in the Christian Science periodicals, bearing ample witness to the continuing vigor and healing power of Christian Science as it encircles the globe. I am so grateful.—(Mrs.) Oleona E. Cochrane, Tacoma, Washington.
I am grateful for this healing of our daughter and for the vigorous life she has led since that occasion. I especially remember with gratitude the acceptance by the school nurse of the effectiveness of Christian Science in this case. —Roy Cochrane.
I am the daughter referred to in the above testimony, and I am happy to add my gratitude for the healing. When in later years some of the symptoms reappeared, latent fear in my own thought was uncovered, and the fact of my true selfhood had to replace my concept of myself as a person who had been healed of some disease.
When this change in my thought took place, the manifestations, which had been alarming, disappeared, and the healing has been complete. I have led a very active life ever since this healing many years ago, including a recent vigorous backpacking trip in the Sierras. I am very grateful for Christian Science.— (Mrs.) Blanche C. Darnell, Napa, California.
