I am grateful to be learning...

I am grateful to be learning through the study and application of Christian Science that God truly does meet our every human need. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health on page 410: "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love."

We had the opportunity to put this statement to a test about six years ago when our second son, then three years old, severely burned the bottom of his feet. The child asked me to read to him from the Bible. I read the twenty-third and ninety-first Psalms to him over and over until he fell asleep for a short nap. When he awoke he was unable to stand on his feet as they were covered with large blisters and the flesh on one of his big toes was burned off.

Early that evening we telephoned our teacher in Christian Science and asked for treatment for the child, who was unable to sleep that first night. The second evening, during a telephone conversation with our teacher, we were told not to sympathize with error. I realized that I was making a reality out of the child's suffering and that I must take a firmer stand for the truth and overcome the fear in my thinking.

That night I sat by the child's bed and talked to him of God's love for him and of his true being as a spiritual child of God. I repeated aloud many times "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health until I had convinced myself of the truth of this statement, which contains the assurance that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."

Also, I remember looking out of the window at a beautiful star-filled sky and reasoning that the same Principle that governed the stars harmoniously also governed our son harmoniously. My thought really became peaceful, and calm, free from fear, for the first time since the accident. The child slept peacefully all night and awoke the next morning completely free from pain.

That week we kept his feet wrapped with clean gauze, and although there was no visible change in them for the next few days, we were assured that Love's healing work was going on. Our attention was called to this passage from Science and Health (p. 249): "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy."

We soon saw evidence that this divine energy had been at work. On the fifth day the blisters; drained and new skin had already formed. Within a week's time new flesh had grown on the boy's big toe, and he was walking again.

Within several weeks the child was going barefoot once again without a trace of a scar on the bottom of his feet. I should like to add that the courage our young son expressed during this experience was an inspiration to both me and my husband.

This healing has been a source of inspiration to me and my family many times since in working out problems. I am very grateful for this healing and for the prayerful work which was done for us during this experience.

I should like to express gratitude for being brought up in a Christian Science Sunday School and for the enlightening and encouraging experience of class instruction. Also, I am deeply grateful for the harmonious births of our three children under Christian Science treatment. The birth of our last child took place in thirty minutes and was completely free of pain.

I am thankful to God for His great goodness in giving to the world Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, as well as Mrs. Eddy and her practical discovery, Christian Science, which is truly the Comforter to this age.—(Mrs.) Dorothy L. Leever, Lake Jackson, Texas.
