Some years after the Second...
Some years after the Second World War, when society was still disorganized, my father, animated with great Christian charity, took under the family roof a man who, because of paralysis of both legs, could not earn a living and thus meet his needs. After a lapse of time, my mother, who used to take the man's meals to his room, was puzzled to see laid out on his bed two big books and a very small one, the pages of which were being referred to in turn.
The man confided that a neighbor, a Swiss, had introduced him to a religion called Christian Science, which, he said, healed all ailments by spiritual means. The books he was using were the Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Quarterly.
At this period I was often subject to heart trouble; and since my grandfather had passed on with this trouble, great fears were being voiced about my condition. A specialist whom I consulted declared that I should cease all athletic activity.
In this extremity I made an appointment with a local Christian Science practitioner, and thus it was that at the age of eighteen I had my first revelation of the nature of God and man in a brief explanation that this woman gave me and above all in the love she radiated, which impressed me deeply. Three months later I realized that since this short visit I had had no more pain. The healing has been permanent.
Shortly thereafter, my family and I had the happy surprise one day to see our friend get up and walk, healed. His diligent study of Science and Health, together with regular visits of encouragement from the neighbor for several months, helped him to receive his healing.
After these two demonstrations of the infallible power of Christian Science, three members of my family took up its study. Great is my gratitude to the dear practitioner who guided my first steps during the years I was far from a Church of Christ, Scientist, and knew of no students of Christian Science with whom to talk. I learned thus to lean constantly on the textbook, which became my teacher and companion. And nothing could deprive me of my daily bread in the form of the Quarterly Lesson-Sermon, had I to study it in a shower room or in a closet by the light of a candle.
The best way for me to express my sincere gratitude for the revelator of this Science of God and man, Mrs. Eddy, is to follow her example. I am very grateful for the love and the encouragement, more often silent than audible, dispensed by Christian Scientists encountered on my way from sense to Soul. To have been led of God to this country where for the first time I became a member of a Church of Christ, Scientist, to have had the blessing of class instruction, and to be able to study Science in broad daylight without fear or hindrance, are indeed constant sources of joy.—Daniel Suiffet, Boston, Massachusetts.
