For the first few years of my married life my husband was not...
For the first few years of my married life my husband was not interested in Christian Science, nor was I. But that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" was proved after my husband had an operation for hemorrhoids. Extreme pain and a nervous condition affecting his skin followed, and the doctors could give him no relief.
My sister, a Christian Scientist, was visiting us and recommended to my husband that he try Christian Science. In no uncertain terms she was told what we both thought of such a method of healing. But the seed of Truth was sown, and sometime later my husband visited a practitioner. This was without my knowledge, and when he returned home one afternoon, smiling and with a clear skin, I accused him of seeing a practitioner, even though I didn't know what the word "practitioner" meant. When questioned, he said he had been told to read a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. He opened the book to page 283 where Mrs. Eddy says, "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action." The healing had been instantaneous.
The following week we attended a Church of Christ, Scientist, and enrolled our daughter in Sunday School. This was over thirty years ago, and was the beginning of the family's reliance on Christian Science for healing.
Headaches, from which I had suffered for many years, were healed through the study of the Bible and Science and Health and the help of a practitioner.
At one time I developed blood poisoning. Although I studied and prayed as we are taught in Christian Science, the condition grew worse. One day my daughter asked me what I was afraid of. This cleared the air, and I realized I had been letting fear dominate my thinking, fear of all the effects I had heard could result from blood poisoning. The healing came quickly when the fear was destroyed.
Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and class instruction have helped me to hold steadfastly to Truth when mortal mind has tried to make me believe that human existence could be made easier by reliance on matter instead of on Spirit.
I am grateful for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, for Mrs. Eddy, whose unselfed love gave us the Comforter promised by Jesus, and for class instruction, which lights the way to understanding and fruition.
