Are You a Revolutionary?

Throughout human history many revolutions have taken place. Many have involved war. Almost all have had liberty and freedom as ultimate aims. Some revolutions have had as an immediate aim the overthrow of some government or regime.

Many individuals are unaware of the great revolution that is taking place today. It is, in fact, the greatest revolution of all time. Every individual in the universe is and will be affected by it, whether or not he is presently aware of it. This revolution, like others, has liberty and freedom as its aims. It, too, involves war. It, too, involves the overthrow of a regime.

And what of the revolutionaries in this great struggle? Who are they? How do they battle? What are their methods?

A great revolutionary herself, Mrs. Eddy describes the revolution for us: "Christian Science and the senses are at war. It is a revolutionary struggle. We already have had two in this nation; and they began and ended in a contest for the true idea, for human liberty and rights. Now cometh a third struggle; for the freedom of health, holiness, and the attainment of heaven."  Miscellaneous Writings, p. 101; And in a sermon she speaks further of this war, "We are in the midst of a revolution; physics are yielding slowly to metaphysics; mortal mind rebels at its own boundaries; weary of matter, it would catch the meaning of Spirit."  Christian Healing, p. 11;

Christian Science is revolutionary because it declares the allness of God and because it denies the existence of matter. It reveals God as the only Mind, the Mind of all. It reveals man, made in God's likeness, as free from sin, sickness, and death.

The regime that must be overthrown in this war is the so-called kingdom of mortal mind, the realm of matter. The true revolution, then, is the turning from matter to Spirit, the realization of the allness of God, Mind, and the consequent nothingness of matter. Anyone who is willing to dedicate his existence to the proving of these facts, day by day and hour by hour, is a genuine revolutionary. He is not satisfied with vaguely accepting spiritual facts as theory. He must live them, love them; they must be a part of his very fabric.

This great revolution is not limited to any class or race. All may join—all who truly love God. Any businessman, student, housewife, teacher, artist is free to become a revolutionary. He must first ask himself these questions: Am I willing to let God be all to me? Am I willing to give up the desire for wealth in matter? Am I willing to love? Am I willing to let go of matter as reality? Anyone answering Yes to these questions may consider himself ready for battle.

To heal the sick through spiritual means is part of this revolution. Did not Jesus command us to do this? To depend on spiritual means alone for healing is to obey this command. It is to take an active part in the revolution.

To refuse to fear is revolutionary. To fear is to expect evil. Therefore, to expect good and to acknowledge good is to cast out fear. Did not our Master tell us, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom"?  Luke 12:32.

To refuse anger, resentment, hatred a place in our thinking is revolutionary. To replace these with the spiritual fact that Mind governs man, that man can feel nothing ungodlike, requires the vitality of a revolutionary.

To remain joyous at all times and under all circumstances is revolutionary. Joy and gratitude constitute the armor of every soldier in this great overturning.

Such things as not smoking or not partaking of alcoholic beverages; bringing up our children according to this higher discipline; maintaining order in our businesses and in our homes; showing friendliness to those around us, inasmuch as these express Mind's direction and control of man, are all victories of the revolution.

Mortal mind would insist that the winning of such goals is not important, that one individual does not count for very much in the universe anyway. Mortal mind would want us to lose sight of the true revolution and interpret it in terms of a class, or race, or political struggle. Even though these human activities may be highly commendable, the true revolutionary needs to remind himself, and often, of the issues at stake, in order to be sure that he is taking part in the highest revolution.

The one great difference between the revolutions mentioned at the beginning of this article and the true revolution now taking place is that in the many human revolutions the soldier, or revolutionary, has been concerned mainly with overcoming, or resisting, things or persons as outside of himself. He has thought that by getting rid of some government or political party or person, he would gain his freedom and win the revolution. The true revolutionary knows that the great revolution must take place in his individual consciousness. To him, all is subjective. The battle consists first of all in casting out his own fear, guarding his own thoughts, letting God's omnipotence outshine the mortal sense of self that would claim to overshadow his true God-created being.

Through the unfoldment of spiritual understanding the writer has become aware of the one true revolution and of the part which each individual may play in it. She has learned to think of Christian Science church services as meetings of individuals who have come together to check their revolutionary course, assess their progress, and carry away a torch of inspiration to glow in their daily lives. She has learned to consider the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly as daily preparation for the great struggle. The Christian Science periodicals spread word of the great revolution that must take place in human consciousness and what the individual can do about it.

If we yearn to march in this great revolution, we can do it in our homes. We can be part of it while taking care of our children and at the office. If we want to be revolutionaries, let us be sure to choose the greatest revolution of all time.
