Joint Lecture Blesses Large Area

Churches of Christ, Scientist, in a large city in California united in giving a Christian Science lecture in the civic auditorium. The preparatory work was planned and chairmaned by one church, but all of the participating committees of the city churches conferred regularly. They prayerfully took the necessary human footsteps, listening first for God's guidance. They also worked with these quotations from Mrs. Eddy's pen:

"Forget self in laboring for mankind; then will you woo the weary wanderer to your door, win the pilgrim and stranger to your church, and find access to the heart of humanity" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 155).

"Millions of unprejudiced minds —simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert— are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences" (Science and Health, p. 570).

All of the church memberships were reminded of the need for individual prayerful metaphysical support of the lecture activity. With the permission of The Christian Science Board of Directors of The Mother Church, letters were sent to all of the Christian Science churches, societies, and college organizations in the surrounding area, inviting their cooperation and support.

News items about the lecture and paid advertisements were placed in the city newspapers, including foreign language papers, and in the local papers in the outlying area. Twenty-five 24-sheet billboards were posted with attractive advertisements (the space and the posting labor were donated by the advertising company). Numerous invitation cards were supplied to the city churches and surrounding branches for prayerful giving and mailing. Window cards were also provided for placing in business districts. Bus cards were printed with another advertisement on the reverse side telling about our radio series, "The Bible Speaks to You," to be used after the lecture was delivered. Radio spot announcements were broadcast. Desk announcements were read it the services in all brandies in the enlarged area. Each city church held a membership meeting in the interest of the lecture one week prior to its date.

With so much prayer, love, cooperation, enthusiasm, and joyous anticipation, the lecture was a tremendous success. Strangers and new students of Christian Science literally poured into the auditorium. Afterward, several thousand copies of our periodicals were handed out.

A woman remarked, "Until I heard this lecture I did not know what happiness is really like."

Another woman said that for several days she had been afraid for her life because of uncontrollable coughing spasms. She saw one of the billboard advertisements and came to the lecture. Soon after it began she felt a sense of quiet and peace. Then she noticed that her coughing had stopped entirely.

A man said that he had been practically unable to walk when he arrived but that after the lecture ended he almost ran the length of the auditorium to express his gratitude to the lecturer for his newfound freedom.

Another man who had come to the city from outside the state to make a scheduled public speaking appearance told of having suffered from influenza for several days. When he entered the auditorium he felt the all-pervading love of God encircling him, and he was completely healed.

One listener expressed gratitude particularly for the helpful ideas given in regard to handling business affairs.

Another stranger told a member, "I came to find out why you people talk about Mary Baker Eddy." He had gained, he said, information about and respect for her from the lecture. He was going to buy the textbook written by her.

Many expressions of gratitude were heard from attendants for the spiritual refreshment they had received; it had replaced sorrow and depression with spiritual joy.

The day following the lecture, attendance virtually doubled in the two downtown joint Reading Rooms. Many strangers asked questions, purchased our literature, and remained to study.

A Sunday School pupil was so impressed with the truth in the lecture (his first) that he asked to serve his church at their forthcoming lecture. He helped in their parking lot and attended his second lecture.

One listener wrote, "I felt that the lecture hour was filled with the power of Spirit, with the joy, inspiration, and holiness of healing."
