Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder...

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 37 of the textbook, Science and Health, "It is possible,—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman,—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness.'"

It is indeed a privilege to be a Christian Scientist and a special joy to use Science in rearing a family. The receptive, eager, childlike trust in God which children express is a daily inspiration. I should like to relate a healing which our young daughter experienced as a result of wholeheartedly turning to divine Love.

One evening after going to bed, she began to cough and continued coughing, unable to stop. I called her to me. We quickly turned to "the scientific statement of being,"' given on page 468 of the textbook, which reads in part: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."' We declared that she was really the perfect child of God, spiritual, and free from error of any sort. Though she made a great effort to repeat the statement with me, the coughing persisted.

Realizing the need for complete reliance on God to meet the insistence of error, we continued reaching out for a clearer understanding of God and of man, His spiritual image and likeness. We tried to open our thought and let divine Love fill our consciousness. I read Mrs. Eddy's article entitled "Angels'" from "Miscellaneous Writings" in which she speaks of the ever-presence of divine Love, closing with these words (p. 307): "This sweet assurance is the 'Peace, be still' to all human fears, to suffering of every sort."'

Together we expressed gratitude for the many times Christian Science had brought healing to us and for Mrs. Eddy, who was God's messenger of truth to this age. The child wanted to talk about Mrs. Eddy, so I read to her from "Retrospection and Introspection" Mrs. Eddy's own account of her childhood and of her healing of fever as she turned to God when she was twelve.

She then asked for "sweet sleep"—her title for the third section of the Christian Science Quarterly Lesson-Sermon, which I had been reading to her each morning that week. It contained this verse from Proverbs (3:24): "When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet." The section continued with, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear" (I John 4:18). It ended with the account of Jesus' healing of the fever of Peter's wife's mother (see Matt. 8:14, 15).

We had both become so inspired and enlightened with the truth that was flooding our thoughts by this prayerful work that a gentle reminder by the man of the house that we had been working for two hours brought the realization that the child was healed! The following morning she participated as usual in the regular weekly swimming lesson at school, absolutely free from any evidence of cold. Up to this time she had often been disturbed in some way before going to sleep; since this time, she has been completely free.

I am so grateful for each opportunity we have to apply Christian Science, for an ever-increasing appreciation of Mrs. Eddy and her dedicated purpose to share this truth with all mankind, for the main blessings Christian Science has brought to our home, for the many avenues of grateful service to the Cause of Christian Science which church membership affords, and, especially, for the "privilege of every child, man, and woman, to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness."—(Mrs.) Ava Merrill Krusz, St. Louis, Missouri.
