One of the milestones which...

One of the milestones which mark my progress in Christian Science is the following" healing which took place when I was a young mother and had just begun the study of Science. My twenty-two-month-old son was being rather fractious one morning while I was making starch, lie took hold of and spilled a pan of boiling starch all over his face and arms.

He screamed and threw himself about, but I immediately declared "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It begins (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."

I called a practitioner for treatment, and immediately the child became calm. After a few minutes he went to sleep in my arms. I continued to declare the above statement and tried to understand its spiritual meaning.

The child slept in my arms for about two hours, and as I held him I became afraid that his face would be permanently marked, for it had become a horrifying sight, but the child wakened happy, ate a good meal, and obviously was suffering no pain. I read the Bible and Science and Health a great deal during the next two days, but there was no improvement in the child's appearance.

On the Wednesday evening I went to the testimony meeting in a branch church and met the practitioner on my way in. When she saw me she knew it was I who needed the help. She spoke to me of God's great love for His children and was so confident that I went into the meeting with uplifted thoughts.

We sang Mrs. Eddy's hymn "Mother's Evening Prayer" during the service, and this calmed my fears. I thought a lot about the words of the hymn, especially the first of these three lines (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 207):

O Life divine, that owns each waiting
hour,
Thou Love that guards the nestling's
faltering flight!
Keep Thou my child on upward wing
tonight.

I knew that God owned this very hour, and I had nothing to fear. That night I slept peacefully.

In the morning the little chap ran in to me, and as I spoke to him I could see the whole of the burnt skin coming off his face like a mask, leaving new skin without spot or blemish.

On the fifth day after the accident I took him to a children's party, and the mothers remarked on his beautiful skin. The healing was complete without recourse to any material aid.

I have had many other opportunities in bringing up a family to prove that God is ever present, protecting and directing. I look back with deep gratitude upon this absolute proof of God's great love.

I am grateful for the spiritual growth resulting from class instruction daily study of the Quarterly Lesson-Sermon, and service in a branch church. "I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore" (Ps. 86:12).—(Mrs.) Phyllis Worrall, Killara, New South Wales, Australia.
