Several years ago I had a distressing abdominal condition. I asked for the help of a practitioner and had relief for a time, only to have a return of the condition with a severe pain which did not yield. After about three weeks the thought came to me that perhaps it would be wise to have a physical diagnosis made. As I started for the telephone to call a physician, the pain became intense. As I walked the floor, a poem by Mrs. Eddy came to my thought. It was "'Feed My Sheep'" and contains these lines (Poems, p. 14):

I will listen for Thy voice,
Lest my footsteps stray.

I then picked up Science and Health, also by Mrs. Eddy. It opened to page 370, and my eyes fell on these words: "A physical diagnosis of disease—since mortal mind must be the cause of disease—tends to induce disease." Then my eyes were drawn to these words beginning on the bottom line of the same page: "Physicians examine the pulse, tongue, lungs, to discover the condition of matter, when in fact all is Mind." I decided right there that I did not want or need a physical diagnosis, and I was filled with joy and gratitude as I gave thanks to God for all good, for Christ Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy, and for the practitioners, who help us along the way.

My telephone rang. The call came from one who had made many demands upon me over a period of years. She began by thanking me for things I had done for her. All resentment I had unconsciously been holding melted away, and compassion reigned. As I left the telephone, I felt something move in my side, and the pain ceased. Three days later I passed a gallstone. Both these healings, the physical one and that of resentment, have been permanent and have stood out as beacons when I have had other trials.

One evening I accidentally spilled some hot paraffin over my hand. Immediately, I declared "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of the textbook, Science and Health. I removed the paraffin and kept working in the truth, knowing that, as the statement tells us, "Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error."

Pain persisted most of the night, until these words from Science and Health came to my thought (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." While thinking about this statement, I fell asleep, and I awoke the next morning free from pain. All that remained of the burn was a slight pinkness between the fingers, and that soon disappeared.

Christian Science is indeed the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus. I am sincerely grateful.— (Mrs.) Annabelle Hagberg, Hollywood, California.
