fulfilling the Healing Mission of Christian Science
Mrs. Eddy in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" states pp. 4, 5): "It is not alone the mission of Christian Science to heal the sick, but to destroy sin in mortal thought. This work well done will elevate and purify the race. It cannot fail to do this if we devote our best energies to the work."
Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies speed the attainment of this goal in their respective communities proportionately to the members' spiritual growth and application of Truth to all church activities.
Mrs. Eddy points out (ibid., pp. 204, 205): "Through the accession of spirituality, God, the divine Principle of Christian Science, literally governs the aims, ambition, and acts of the Scientist. The divine ruling gives prudence and energy; it banishes forever all envy, rivalry, evil thinking, evil speaking and acting; and mortal mind, thus purged, obtains peace and power outside of itself. This practical Christian Science is the divine Mind, the incorporeal Truth and Love, shining through the mists of materiality and melting away the shadows called sin, disease, and death."
A church in Kentucky planned an extensive inspirational program that was based on the theme, "Progress Through Healing Activities. Various activities were planned which involved the participation of every member. As a result of this united project, over one hundred topics of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, were given away, and a large number of non-Scientists were personally invited to attend a lecture, the church services, and the Sunday School.
Some of these individuals have already become members of the church, and many healings have been reported by the new readers of the textbook. A few instances follow: The mother of a man who lost an important position because of alcoholism accepted a copy. The son is now well on his way to recovery, and the mother is making application to join a branch church. One who was suffering from an illness that had been diagnosed as malignant was completely healed through reading the book, and has found a new position. An individual who had been tremendously opposed to Christian Science was healed of this resistance. A child who was seriously ill and unable to retain any food was healed within a very short time.
From the state of Victoria in Australia, a church tells of its experience in connection with the giving of a Christian Science lecture. Months in advance, meetings were held and plans made in preparation for this lecture, and the members gave prayerful metaphysical support through the date, of its delivery. The lecture was held in a local theater.
There was a very large attendance, and the lecturer remarked about the rapt attention of the audience. The owner of the theater and his wife made a special effort to attend. A man who had suffered severe, leg cramps for a long period of time was completely healed. One member who had not come to the church services for eighteen months because of opposition in her home, was so roused by the lecture that she began to attend services again regularly. Another member who had been manifesting a distressing condition was instantaneously healed at the beginning of the lecture.
An Illinois church writes of a healing that took place as the result of its literature distribution activity. A woman was completely healed of arthritis of the spine by reading a copy of The Christian Science Journal which she had taken from a distribution rack of free Christian Science literature placed in a local launderette. She now attends the services of this branch church and has enrolled her daughter in the Sunday School.
Mrs. Eddy says in a letter dated 1903: "Healing is the best sermon, healing is the best lecture, and the entire demonstration of Christian Science. The sinner and the sick healed are our best witnesses" (journal, May, 1936, p. 97). This statement indicates the important relation that healing has to the prosperity of our movement in every community.
