In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy...

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes on page 423: "The matter-physician deals with matter as both his foe and his remedy. He regards the ailment as weakened or strengthened according to the evidence which matter presents. The metaphysician, making Mind his basis of operation irrespective of matter and regarding the truth and harmony of being as superior to error and discord, has rendered himself strong, instead of weak, to cope with the case; and he proportionately strengthens his patient with the stimulus of courage and conscious power."

The contrast between these two systems of coping with difficulties never fails to remind me of a healing I experienced a few years ago.

When in the eighth grade it became necessary for me to be fitted with glasses. I had been reared in Christian Science and had had no experience with any other method of healing, but I took no steps in Science to rectify this apparent eye deficiency.

As I became active in the Christian Science organization on my college campus, I became more aware of my duty as a Christian Scientist to demonstrate man's God-given perfection as best I could, and I felt that wearing glasses was not doing this.

I then began periodically to study Mrs. Eddy's references to eyes, sight, seeing, vision, and so on. As I gained more insight into the spirituality of this faculty, I was able to stop wearing glasses much of the time, but they were still necessary for many of my activities.

Two years later, when I was teaching in the public schools, I became ill with a form of influenza. I called a practitioner for treatment in order to return to my classroom as soon as possible. Much to my surprise she said nothing of the specific symptom I was manifesting. She spoke only of the perfection of God and of man as His image and likeness.

For two days, I prayed and studied hard to understand more fully this perfection and to become a true reflection. On the third day I was well enough to return to school, and I soon completely recovered from the influenza. In addition, I have not found it necessary to wear corrective lenses at any time since.

I am truly grateful for all the good I am learning and experiencing through my study of Christian Science. My husband and I have turned to God for help often, and every need has been met. It is truly wonderful to have something so quick and sure to rely on in times of trouble.—(Mrs.) Margaret Q. Flinn, Lakewood, Ohio.
