I have been a student of Christian Science...

I have been a student of Christian Science since I was enrolled in a Sunday School at the age of five. I am sincerely grateful for the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.

About nine years ago, while I was a member of a bowling team, I twisted my back as I threw a ball. This caused a very sharp pain, and as I walked back to my scat I could feel myself losing consciousness. When I opened my eyes, many people had gathered around me offering many material remedies. I thanked them all but asked if someone would call my parents, since I was closer to their home than my own, and ask them to have my brother pick me up. I could not walk unaided, and each step was very painful.

My mother called a practitioner immediately, and she arrived at my parents' home about the same time I did. She spent about an hour with me, prayerfully working to calm my fears and quoting citations from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. We went over quite thoroughly the answer to the question, "What is man?" The answer begins (p. 475): "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God."

My husband had been called to my parents' home, and we decided to spend the night there. I had a very restless and painful night, and since my husband was not a Christian Scientist, he became very much alarmed and asked me if I would not consider seeing a doctor. I asked him to give me a few days, and then if he did not see any improvement, I would do as he wished.

The next day while my husband was at work, my mother, the practitioner, and I read and studied the weekly Lesson-Sermon, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, and many of the writings of Mrs. Eddy. By the time my husband returned from work that night, I met him unaided at the door. I walked slowly, but I was walking alone. By the third day we went back to our apartment, which was on the second floor, and I walked up each step. Progress was made each day, and by the end of a week I went back to my office job to the surprise of many people who had been bowling with me and who had predicted I would be laid up for months.

The practitioner had asked me to memorize and prove these words (ibid., p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." I am grateful that I did rise in God's strength and that this healing proved in my community that Christian Science heals.

I am very grateful for other healings and for our practitioners, who so lovingly give their help when needed.—(Mrs.) Gloria B. Laube, Deerfield, Illinois.
