My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came through a friend of my mother who had been healed of the need of a major operation. Whenever she visited our home, she talked a great deal about Science and explained some of its teachings. During my childhood I was subject to an illness which confined me to my home each year for two weeks in the spring and fall and which the doctors could not diagnose.
When I was in my teens I started to go to business, and one day I became ill with all the symptoms of the previous illness. I became frightened and thought I would lose my position if I had to stay home from business as I had to stay home from business as I had had to stay home from school.
At that point I decided to visit my mother's friend and ask her if she thought Christian Science could heal me. She replied that it certainly could, and she gave me a treatment. She asked me what I thought God was; and I told her that He must be very far away, for He never seemed to answer my prayers. She then explained that God is everywhere and has all power. The next morning I was much better, and within a few days my healing was complete. I never had a recurrence of that illness.
Through the years I have had many other proofs of God's healing power. On a Saturday morning I badly sprained my ankle, and I was in my place of business on Monday with the ankle normal. This healing came about with the help of practitioner. Colds and the fear of them have been met. At one time I accidentally poured a large quantity of boiling water over one hand.
I immediately thought of "the scientific statement of being," given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health. It reads in part (p. 468), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." Although there were others in the kitchen when this happened, no one knew of the accident. Shortly after, I had to put this hand in hot water, and I was able to do so without feeling any pain.
Some years ago it was necessary for me to return to business after being away for over twenty-five years. I was divinely led to a good position. I had to turn wholeheartedly to God many times and affirm that as actually a child of God, divine Mind, I reflected His infinite intelligence. Understanding this, I could do whatever it was my duty to do. The following lines from Science and Health proved to be of great help (p. 215): "Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life."
One day I started out to go shopping, and as I waited for the bus I realized that I had a very sore throat. My inclination was to return home and do some prayerful work; but instantly the thought came to me that right where I was standing, God was, that right there I could reject the thought of illness and declare the truth. I was reminded of the statement in Science and Health which reads (p. 463), "To decide quickly as to the proper treatment of error—whether error is manifested in forms of sickness, sin, or death—is the first step towards destroying error." In a few moments I was entirely free and went on my way thanking God.
I wish to express my gratitude for our church services, lectures, periodicals, class instruction, and for the practitioners, who stand by ready to help whenever called upon, day or night. I am grateful for Christ Jesus, the Founder of Christianity, and for our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has given us a practical, demonstrable understanding of God.—(Mrs.) Mildred R. Hollien, Woodhaven, New York.
