Some twenty years ago an illness...
Some twenty years ago an illness necessitated my leaving my husband and young daughter in order that I might stay with a sister in another state for rest and healing. In her home was a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. In my search for healing I reached out to God and was led to find this book. Although I was unaware of the change taking place in my thinking through the study of it, the healing was made evident.
However, upon my return to the family, we attended an orthodox church and Sunday School with renewed dedication, and I did continue to study Christian Science. Then some years later another sister, a new student of Christian Science, visited us. She expressed so much faith in the Bible statement that "with God all things are possible"(Matt. 19:26) that my interest was aroused.
Several weeks later my husband obtained some copies of the Sentinel. The truth stated therein recalled my having read Science and Health some years before.
Upon moving to another state, I visited a Christian Science church. The joy, love, and unfoldment gained at the first service I attended made me desire to attend regularly. Our daughter loved to attend the Sunday School; and since the church maintained a nursery where we could leave our baby son, my husband soon joined me in attending church. After a Wednesday testimony meeting a member helped me to borrow a copy of Science and Health from the lending library.
Soon after this my husband had an attack of abdominal pain which was acute quite alarming. He desired to use and test Christian Science, so requested that I read aloud from the borrowed book. About one hour later it seemed right for him to read to himself. I went to bed and prayed that God would give him light. Our understanding was only being awakened, and we felt only faith at this time. In the morning I awakened to find him free and healed. We both rejoiced in our newly found God.
As the true sense of home was developing in my thought, we secured a more adequate dwelling. The meaning of the statement on page 254 of the Christian Science textbook, "Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God," began to unfold. When one is a pilgrim seeking a new way, a stranger in a new land (the land of Christian Science), to realize that he is a guest of God is a relaxing experience. I realized that a guest is always beautifully cared for by the host—all provision for his comfort and needs supplied.
The mortal beliefs of limitation disappeared. Truly we were sheltered during our period of slow but steady seeking and striving to enter into this blessed truth.
After attending a Christian Science lecture, I had the opportunity to use some of the truths stated. I had cleaned the garage of some paper shreds from the bed of a litter of puppies; and since our home was in a rural area, it seemed perfectly right to burn them. With great care a spot was selected and a fire started. Several trips to the garage were necessary.
After one such trip I saw that the field had caught fire and was burning rapidly. An attempt to beat the fire out failed when the handle of the broom I was using broke. I thought of calling the fire department, but the distance for them to come was great.
Suddenly I began to claim my authority as a Christian Scientist. Several parts of verses from the ninety-first Psalm came to my thought, including these words (verses 5, 6): "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; ... nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday."
Immediately fear and helplessness disappeared from thought. Strength, the power of the presence of good, became real with the thought from Science and Health (p. 171), "Mind's control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science."
This contemplation so lifted my thought from the material situation that, upon again viewing the fire, I was grateful to see it burning under control in the area I had originally selected. Though a large scarred area was visible around it, the fire in that area had harmlessly burned out. This proved to me the power of spiritual right thinking and Mind's control over the universe.
Some years later, at a picnic, our son stepped on a nail in a piece of wood gathered for the fire. He was wearing sneakers at the time, and the nail penetrated the foot. With his father, he retired to the house to commune with divine Mind, God.
Shortly they returned, the child completely free. His thought was so clear and uplifted that a few weeks later he testified to the healing at a Wednesday testimony meeting, expressing gratitude for the loving, healing thoughts of those present at the picnic, all of whom were Christian Scientists. As parents, we can more easily release our loved ones to God's care when we see such proof of the power of divine Mind over its idea.
The sustaining influence of this religion was clearly seen when a sister of mine, visiting us after the passing of our daughter, stated, "We came to comfort you, but you are comforting us." The truths which became apparent and comforted the disciples after Jesus' resurrection came to comfort us and uplift us to the contemplation of spiritual realities.
For all these healings and many more which I have received in my fifteen years of applying Christian Science, for Mrs. Eddy's selfless gift, the revelation of this Science, for her clear explanation of the teachings of our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, class instruction, and the lessons learned from the opportunity of serving on committees, as librarian, and as Second Reader in a branch church, I am sincerely grateful.—(Mrs.)Marguerite P.
