Step by Step

The leaven of Spirit working in human consciousness constantly unfolds the desire for something better and urges individuals to do something about attaining it. This activity provides the assurance that with proper effort individual lives can be improved, and in this improvement mankind can be lifted to a higher basis of accomplishment.

Eliphaz pointed out to Job what he needed to do in order to lift himself out of the severe difficulties which Satan had imposed upon him. Eliphaz declared of the Almighty (Job 22:21), "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee." Job finally heeded this advice and was released from the evils that had reduced him to a state of helplessness and hopelessness.

The peace that comes to one as he acquaints himself with God is not merely a temporary respite from difficulties. It is not a period in which to take it easy. It is a state of thought that provides the opportunity to demonstrate one's coexistence with God. A verse of a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal gives comfort and encouragement by pointing to the limitless good which God, divine Love, provides for all who turn to Him. It reads (No. 238),
