I should like to relate a healing...
I should like to relate a healing which has stood out to me as a waymark in my progress in Christian Science. Some years ago I had an accident that for a few seconds left me unconscious. My husband immediately came and assisted me to bed and then called a practitioner to give me prayerful treatment.
Although I was in considerable discomfort, my consciousness was flooded with the thought, "This can only be for the glory of God." This statement stayed with me until the healing was accomplished.
I had the feeling that my body had been crushed, but it never occurred to me to have any broken bones set because I knew Truth could heal effectively. Since I was not able to rise the next morning, a loving friend, who is a consecrated Christian Scientist, came to be with me through the day. She did this for the next four days, for which I was very grateful.
The pelvis appeared to have been broken, but I was able to walk downstairs on the sixth day. Throughout this experience I saw more clearly than ever before that I was not trying to heal matter but rather destroying an erroneous suggestion.
A statement from "Retrospection and Introspection" by Mrs. Eddy was very helpful. It says (p. 26), "Our great Way-shower, steadfast to the end in his obedience to God's laws, demonstrated for all time and peoples the supremacy of good over evil, and the superiority of Spirit over matter."
Also, the following reference to Jesus from Mrs. Eddy's "Unity of Good" was inspiring (p. 11): "He annulled the laws of matter, showing them to be laws of mortal mind, not of God." And on the same page we read, "Jesus required neither cycles of time nor thought in order to mature fitness for perfection and its possibilities."
A primary concern at this time was that my association meeting was only three weeks away, and it was necessary for me to travel over fifteen hundred miles to attend it. The practitioner constantly assured me this would be possible because the meeting was a right activity provided for in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. When the time came, I was able to travel alone by train and also to sit through the meeting without discomfort.
This is only one of many proofs I have had of the healing power of Christian Science. There have been instantaneous healings of a painful foot condition and a severe sore throat, a quick healing of smallpox, and healings of numerous unnamed physical difficulties. Some of these healings were accomplished by my own work and some with the help of a practitioner. Christian Science has brought healing, harmony, and guidance into our home.
Through the years I have been increasingly appreciative of the privilege of having attended a Christian Science Sunday School from an early age. Church membership has helped immeasurably in my journey from sense to Soul.
I am especially grateful for the privilege of having served as Second Reader. At that time it unfolded to me that the Order of Services given in the Manual came as our Leader's demonstration. Therefore, while serving as Reader, I was a part of that demonstration, sustained and protected by it; thus I could always be in my place. This proved to be true, for it was never necessary for me to be absent except at regular vacation periods. God has indeed shown me His great goodness!—(Mrs.) Myrtle Pye Mayhall, Omaha, Nebraska.
