Activities for the Armed Services
While on guard duty, a soldier climbed to the top of a tower at a prison stockade. Suddenly the door he was opening to enter the tower fell back on him; as he tried to avoid it, he slipped and fell thirty feet to the ground. Taken up unconscious, he was rushed to an Army hospital.
On the way he regained consciousness and began to affirm truths of Christian Science to himself. Upon arrival at the hospital he was given permission to telephone a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services. The Minister first recalled to the soldier the Bible story of Eutychus, who, while listening to Paul preach, fell asleep, toppled from the third floor, and was taken up dead. Going down to Eutychus, Paul embraced him and restored him to life.
After referring to this account, the Minister reminded the soldier that the spiritual and perfect man of God's creating is held securely in the harmony of God's law and so cannot fall and be injured. Then he encouraged him to cling to this truth, having confidence it would overcome the harmful effects of false, material law and bring healing.
"Remember," the Minister continued, "there is no condemnation of self or of others." This statement struck home, because the soldier had been entertaining false concepts of the prisoners and of the personnel in command of the stockade. Correcting his sense of them helped him to correct his sense of himself and to gain his healing.
X rays showed no broken bones or dislocations. However, after very careful examinations, the doctors found microscopic traces of blood in the soldier's secretions. When the Minister received this report, he reminded the soldier of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health, "Matter disappears under the microscope of Spirit" (p. 264). As the soldier's sense of true substance became magnified by his understanding of Spirit, he overcame his fear of the disturbing symptoms, and they disappeared.
While in the hospital, he was given no drugs. The doctors said his was a most remarkable case and soon released him to duty. His gratitude for the Minister's help was heartfelt.
