The written word is often inadequate...
The written word is often inadequate to express one's true feelings. This is particularly true of my deep gratitude for all the blessings which have come to me and my family through the application of the truths taught in Christian Science.
Having the privilege of growing up in a family where Science was and still is loved and lived made it extremely important to me that our own children experience the peace, joy, and happiness found in an atmosphere where God is acknowledged as the head of the household.
At a time when our first son was in much discomfort from a skin trouble, we turned to God for help. The child was about three years old and had manifested a great deal of willfulness. However, in our work with the practitioner whom we had asked to give him treatment, we were reminded that the difficulty must be met mainly in our own thought. We began to realize that we had accepted a belief of willfulness about the child and had actually been indulging in the belief ourselves.
During this time my mother brought to me several copies of the Sentinel, and one article gave a very illuminating illustration of the gentle yet powerful action of divine Mind. The article brought out that the sun dispels the mists that envelop the lovely mountain lakes and valleys early in the morning by its own warmth. It knows nothing about the mist.
When this line of reasoning was applied to the situation at hand we could see that whatever was trying to attach itself to an idea of God could not do so. God is not conscious of any inharmony in His creation, whether it be disease, lack, or any other inharmonious condition.
If the Father knows nothing of the lie, then His son cannot either. Divine Love dissolves the mist of mortal mind effortlessly and noiselessly once we let Love do the work and get our misplaced parental fears out of the way. We began rejoicing in all the positive qualities of good that are forever available for expression through Love's ideas.
Within a remarkably short time the mists were dispelled, and the child was able to play freely and happily. For the previous few weeks he had been comfortable only on his stomach or when he was held. We were extremely grateful for his physical freedom, but our deepest gratitude has come from the realization of the child's freedom from willfulness.
For having been able to rely solely on Christian Science during the births of each of our seven children, for healings of inharmonious family relationships, and for financial difficulties overcome, I am thankful. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, the priceless privilege of class instruction, the loving support of my husband, who is a devoted student of Science, the dear, consecrated practitioners, nurses, and teachers of Christian Science who selflessly devote their lives to the spiritual enlightenment of others are other causes for deep and humble gratitude.
This would be an incomplete testimony if I did not also give gratitude for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy, our Leader.—(Mrs.) Dorothy L. McCoy, Sunnyvale, California.
