In 1904 I first heard the words...

In 1904 I first heard the words "Christian Science" and became curious to learn the meaning of the words but it seemed the ones I asked knew no more than I about the meaning. Soon after, I met a man, who later became my husband. He had been studying Science for some time, and his answers to my questions satisfied me, so that I could see what a beautiful religion it is. It fitted my needs in so many ways, and I began its study not for healing but because the religion appealed to me.

Shortly I had my first healing without the aid of a practitioner. For several years every winter I had had a siege of tonsillitis. Sometimes it would develop into something more serious. One afternoon the symptoms of tonsillitis began to develop. I felt I could talk with God about this trouble, as man talks with man. My husband was sitting beside me reading aloud from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I felt a deep desire to bear witness to the fact that Christian Science can and does heal.

My husband came to the words (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." It seemed as if a burden had been lifted off my shoulders, and I was free from the trouble. From that time to this. I have never suffered from this or any related disease. This was proof of how great the power of God is to meet one's difficulties.

Sometime ago I injured my right shoulder. When I tried to rise from the position in which I found myself, I had no use of the arm. I could get into no position to get up; so I lay still a few minutes. Then these words came to me (ibid., p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man."

Once more I tried to get up, and as I did I felt and heard the joint of the right shoulder snap back into place. I was able to get up and had no further difficulty.

I could tell of many proofs of the healing power of God we have witnessed down through the years in our family of five. My husband and I were always active workers in Christian Science churches wherever we lived.

Words are inadequate to express my great appreciation of all the good God has bestowed on me through the sixty years since I first heard the words "Christian Science."—(Mrs.) Mabel C. Riggs, Three Oaks, Michigan.
