Activities for the Armed Services
From the Air Force comes this outstanding report of healing: An Air Force lieutenant learned that he would receive a medical discharge from the service because of frequent absences from duty due to illness. For over fifteen years he had experienced acute asthmatic pains, colds, and fever, resulting in much time lost from his post.
One day in desperation he asked his captain, "Why am I always ill, and you always well?" The captain replied that he was a Christian Scientist and loaned the lieutenant a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Within a week he had read it from cover to cover. His interest in Christian Science was awakened and increased as he continued to read. But still he was not healed. The captain then recommended that he call the Christian Science Minister who regularly visited the base and ask him for help through prayer.
Late one night, in great distress, the lieutenant telephoned the Minister. The Minister assured him he would gladly give him Christian Science treatment if he did not go to the clinic or take any medication, as he would previously have done.
After the lieutenant agreed to these provisions, the Minister prayed, humbly affirming God's allness. He acknowledged the fact that the officer was in reality the beloved child of God, spiritual and perfect, that he was therefore exempt from fear and aggressive suggestions of the five physical senses. After confidently affirming these and other truths of Christian Science, the Minister returned to bed, but before he fell asleep, the telephone rang. It was the lieutenant. He said he had received no relief and was leaving at once for the clinic. The Minister encouraged him to place his trust steadfastly in God and then resumed his prayerful work.
There were no more telephone calls that night, and on his next visit to the base, the Minister found the lieutenant in perfect health. He had not gone to the clinic, but had relied completely on God. As a result he was healed and so was able to remain in the service. In addition, through his continued study of Christian Science he became a more proficient pilot and navigator.
