When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was presented to me by a dear sister, I was in a depressed, morbid state of mind following the loss of my husband in World War I. I was left with two young children, the baby only six months old. I bought a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I was lent copies of the Sentinel; but I could not understand what I read, perhaps because I had had a medical training.
I had always regularly attended an orthodox church, taken part in its activities, and read a portion of the Bible every day. I often wished I had some guide for suitable passages to read; so I bought a Christian Science Quarterly just for the helpful verses from the Bible. Often I would look to see what Mrs. Eddy said in the correlative passages in the textbook. I attended Christian Science lectures, and the church services at intervals; but I investigated other religions, especially any relating to spiritual healing.
Twenty-seven years ago I had a nervous breakdown, and I consulted a doctor and took medicine for the last time. I was worse after that. I went to a Christian Science practitioner, and with his patient help my health was restored. I joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and The Mother Church and had class instruction, and I have attended my association meetings regularly. Through my study of Christian Science, my outlook on life has changed from one which expected misfortune to pounce on me at every turn to one of confidence in a loving Father-Mother God.
Many difficulties have been overcome—constipation, a tendency to colds, fits of depression, and the inability to speak in public. Business deals have been completed satisfactorily, and lost articles have been restored. I have experienced protection when motoring, and I have had happy companionship. I am grateful that one of my children is a member of a branch church, that the other also has confidence in the healing power of Truth, and that my grandchildren have been able to attend Christian Science Sunday Schools.
I am thankful to God that this wonderful Science is unfolding to me, that Christ Jesus explored the way for us, and that Mrs. Eddy gave her revelation to the world. I am grateful too for all those who through the ages have preserved for us the Christian heritage.—(Mrs.) Mabel Curry, Upper Hutt, New Zealand.
