What is more beautiful or...
What is more beautiful or more simple than putting one's confidence in God, who gives to man all that he needs?
Serving under the flag, I have had proof that He protects us and sustains us during difficult moments.
Before I was to take part in a military operation, I came down with a high fever. This is what happened. First of all, the operation was called off, and my comrades went out only on patrol; as for me, without my asking anyone, I was appointed barracks orderly. Being alone, I did prayerful mental work and began to study "The People's Idea of God" by Mary Baker Eddy.
After having read several pages, I paused at this sentence (p. 10): "We possess our own body, and make it harmonious or discordant according to the images that thought reflects upon it." Then, turning my thought completely to God, I succeeded in getting rid of the discordant image, and in the evening, when my comrades returned, I was healed.
Many times I have been delivered from danger. One day, while lying in ambush, we were waiting for a truck carrying soldiers. The truck arrived and was stopped; and all the soldiers got out and surrendered, except a few who, seized with fear, fled. The order was given to shoot. Then the following sentence which I had read in a copy of The Herald of Christian Science (French Edition) came to my thought: "I realized clearly that it was impossible for me to dwell in the consciousness of Love so long as I thought it possible for another to be excluded from it."
Everything became calm again, although several of my companions had fired in obedience to the order. Since I was the radio operator I did not fire. The fugitives gave themselves up and no one had been wounded. What a joy it was for me to have known that the presence of God accompanies all His children! I am sure that one loving thought at that moment accomplished much good.
God is here and everywhere, and I am very happy to learn in Christian Science to see all men as really the children of God and to know that He alone can restore peace to the heart. I am very grateful that although I have always been humanly prepared to do so, I have not had to make use of my weapons since I have been in the Army.
I thank God for Christ Jesus, for his life of love and sacrifice, and for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has given us this beautiful religion, Christian Science. I am happy to be a member of The Mother Church, to have served during my civilian life in a group of Scientists meeting informally to hold services, and to have had the privilege of class instruction.— Abel Robert, Issoudun, Indre, France.
