"Why am I here?"
"Why am I here?" "What is the point of existence?" "What is God?" At a time when I was searching for answers to these questions a dear friend introduced me to Christian Science. Since then this wonderful religion has proved adequate to answer any question and to solve every problem when I have properly applied it. Shortly after beginning the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, given in the Quarterly, I was healed of defective eyesight. I had been told I would never be able to dispense with glasses, nor would I be able to drive a car. Both these predictions were proved incorrect when a complete healing took place without any specific prayerful work being done about the condition.
I have experienced happy, harmonious childbirth on seven occasions without the use of any drugs or other medication, and the children have enjoyed abundant health, confidence in good, and protection. Burns, poisoned fingers, coughs, colds, and so-called children's diseases have quickly yielded either with the help of a practitioner or through our own understanding of the present perfection of God's creation.
When our eldest child was a five-year-old, she came home from school one day with the symptoms of measles. She was crying when I took her in my arms, and she had a very high temperature. I spoke to her of God's love, which is always with us even though a lie called measles would try to make itself real to us.
We repeated "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and affirmed the fact that in spite of what the material senses would try to say, she was God's spiritual idea, held perfect in Mind, complete, intact, and untouched by a material condition. As the last two sentences of the statement assure us: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." The wonderful realization of everpresent Love, God's healing presence, enfolded us. I felt the fever disappear from her body and her temperature become normal.
This was an instantaneous healing, because she then jumped off my knee and ran out to play without any further sign of the complaint.
This same child once fell from a moving car and was brought into the house suffering from nervous shock and pain. There were several deep cuts in her head, which were bleeding freely, and it appeared that she was badly injured; but a friend, not a Christian Scientist, came in first, saying, "She's all right." I was grateful for this statement and held on to it, knowing that no matter what the physical senses testified, the child was spiritual, harmonious, inviolate, as the image and likeness of God. Bleeding ceased immediately; but I put her to bed.
I opened the textbook, Science and Health, and read (p. 332), "Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation." I realized that our loving Father gives nothing but good to His beloved children and that anything unlike good is a lie. I persuaded the child to repeat "the scientific statement of being" with me, and she did this although she was still crying. She then became quiet and went to sleep. She awoke a little later and ran out to play happily with the other children, and the cuts healed quickly and completely.
Although my husband is not a Christian Scientist, he has supported me in my dependence upon God for healing, and I am grateful for a happy marriage.
I am grateful too for all the avenues through which the truth of God and of man comes to us—the Lesson-Sermons, the literature from The Christian Science Publishing Society, membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, our practitioners, and class instruction. Above all, I am grateful for Christ Jesus and for Mrs. Eddy, who gave us Christian Science, whereby we can understand God and the teachings of the master Christian.—(Mrs.) Betty G. Hendriksen, Coal Creek, Roxburgh R. D., New Zealand.
