I am extremely grateful that I...
I am extremely grateful that I had the privilege of learning about Christian Science when I was a young girl. At that time I prayed daily that God might lead me to those who could give me a spiritual—a clear—concept of Him and His creation. My prayer was heard, for, quite evidently through God's guidance, I went to Berlin to care for an aunt, a Christian Scientist, who at the time was paralyzed.
I was then living in Latvia. Like many others after the First World War, I had to wait a long time before I received permission to travel to Germany. However, I refused to be discouraged. I believed that if it was God's will that I receive enlightenment in Berlin, through His guidance I would get there. And that is the way it was.
It was through my aunt that I learned of Christian Science. After I had read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy from cover to cover, I was convinced that this Science is the Comforter which will guide us to Truth. It was a great joy to be able to attend a Christian Science Sunday School for three months before my twentieth birthday.
My aunt was healed through Christian Science treatment, and today she is in good health and caring for a great-nephew.
After some time I had my first opportunity to prove the healing power of Christian Science. As a member of an athletic club I took courses in gymnastics. Every year the club held a grand festival. On the way to see a dear friend one cold day in winter, shortly before the festival, I suddenly felt a severe pain in one of my knees, and it was only with difficulty that I reached my friend's home. While we were talking about Christian Science, the pain vanished; but on the way home it was worse than ever.
The next day I studied earnestly the current Quarterly Lesson-Sermon, the subject of which was "Truth." Despite my earnest efforts to prove the unreality and powerlessness of this belief of mortal mind, it did not yield. But I placed my whole trust in the unlimited power of Truth, for I was absolutely certain it would free me.
On the day of the performance I was driven in a horse-drawn carriage to the gymnasium. In the cloakroom I was surrounded by happiness and cheer, and I quite forgot my knee. As though on wings, and with unusual lightness, I carried out the exercises, and we won enthusiastic applause. Back in the cloakroom again, I knew I was healed. My joy and gratitude for this healing were indescribably great. The pain has never returned.
By applying the rules of Christian Science with good results to every problem that has arisen, I have been privileged to store up numerous experiences during the years that have followed. Through my own spiritual work I was freed in a comparatively short time of rheumatic pains in my shoulder and head. In addition, I have been healed, solely through spiritual work done in Christian Science, of a goiter and the grippe. Also a broken bone in my foot was healed quickly.
With grateful reverence I think of Christ Jesus and of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who unlocked for us the true, spiritual meaning of the Bible. Each day I rejoice that I am a member of The Mother Church, which, with its manifold activities, is a blessing to all adherents of this Science. I am also very grateful for class instruction and for all the periodicals of our great movement.—(Mrs.) Elfriede Marie Schroeder, East Detroit, Michigan.
