Although I had had some evidences...
Although I had had some evidences of Christian Science blessing and healing earlier, the most vivid to me today is a demonstration of God's all-presence which came to me while I was attending an Army Air Force flying school just prior to World War II. I had reached the forty-hour mark of the sixty-hour primary course, and this meant a routine check ride with a civilian instructor.
I failed to pass this test because I had developed a flying habit of cross controlling. I telephoned my mother at home and told her that I would probably fail the course and be home soon and that I was very much discouraged. Before being finally eliminated each student had to be tested by military personnel, and I was to receive my Army flight check the following day.
My mother said she would call a Christian Science practitioner and ask for help for me through prayer. The Army flight was generally routine, and up to this point none of those failing the civilian check had passed the Army test.
The flight the next day was one that was never duplicated during my career as an Army pilot with two thousand hours of flying. It was as if someone else were flying the plane. Everything was done perfectly. "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 494). I passed the check and finished the course with my class.
About eleven years ago my throat became quite sore one evening. I awoke in the night with an extremely painful throat, and I was hardly able to swallow. I arose and picked up a copy of Science and Health and began to read from the beginning. I reached this passage on page 14: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,— neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints."
Immediately the soreness in my throat lessened, and I returned to bed. By morning, I was feeling nothing more than a tickle, and that soon disappeared completely.
For the many instances of protection I received during seventy-three combat missions and for the wonderful healings of our children during their early years, I am indeed grateful. Truly the words of Paul (Acts 17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being," have been a watchword.
I am grateful for Christ Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy and her revelation, Christian Science, and for class instruction, which speeds us in our flight from sense to Soul. —Burton E. Cox, Ogallala, Nebraska.
