God Is the Only Cause

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Since there were no other children in Jimmy's neighborhood, Queenie, his Boston terrier, was the only playmate Jimmy had. When Queenie became the mother of five puppies, he was very happy, for now he would have six playmates—at least until the babies were sold. He could hardly wait for the hungry, squirming, snubnosed puppies to open their eyes and begin to walk.

Finally they did open their eyes and began getting up on their wobbly little legs and moving around in the garage; that is, all but the tiniest one.

She was so alert and appealing that Jimmy chose her for his own special pet, named her Princess, and said he didn't want her to be sold. Jimmy felt sure that her eyes sparkled as he told her this and that she understood what he said to her. But Princess did not walk. Day after day went by while she dragged her hind legs, trying to keep up with the other puppies as they romped around the yard.

Jimmy and his family knew that this was not right and did not have to be accepted. They had learned through Christian Science that God made everything and that because He is good, He made everything good. Mother had often read to Jimmy from the Bible (Gen. 1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." She also read to him from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

One statement they often turned to in order to help them understand that only good is real and true is found on page 140. It reads, "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."

Jimmy would take Princess in his arms and tell her these truths, and she would look up at him as though she were saying, "I know!" Still Princess did not walk. And everyone who came to see the puppies, including a veterinarian, said that her legs were paralyzed and that she could not possibly ever walk. But Jimmy and Mother refused to believe that this was true about the puppy because she was really spiritual and created by God.

Finally the puppy's legs became much worse. Jimmy and his mother realized that they must be unconsciously believing this lie enough to make them a little afraid. Then Mother turned to Science and Health and read this statement (p. 550): "God is the Life, or intelligence, which forms and preserves the individuality and identity of animals as well as of men."

As they closed the garage door for the night, they declared that error could not make them afraid, because they knew that God not only made everything good but preserved—or kept—it that way. Christ Jesus once asked his disciples (Matt. 8:26), "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?"

The next morning when Father opened the garage door, Princess came out with the other puppies, not dragging her hind legs, but walking on them, shakily but confidently. She seemed to become stronger and stronger throughout the day, and the next day she ran as fast and played as happily as any of her brothers and sisters.

Jimmy and his family were so joyous and grateful for this demonstration over the belief of evil that they said they would never forget it. And they never have. Many times, remembering it has helped them to work out other problems.

Once Jimmy had an infected foot, and error seemed to tell him for several days that he was in great pain and could not walk. It also seemed to tell his family that the way the foot looked frightened them. But they remembered the healing of Princess, and they knew that no matter how frightening error seems to be, it has no power or reality, because God made everything good and keeps it that way. Suddenly all pain was gone, though the appearance of the foot remained the same for another twenty-four hours. Then the infected place opened and drained. In a day or so Jimmy was running and jumping as usual.

Jimmy and his family have since had many reasons to thank God for Christian Science, which is teaching them and thousands of others that God, good, is the only cause.
