Activities for the Armed Services
An officer who was informed by Navy doctors that he had a heart murmur was grounded, and he was told he could not fly again unless he could pass the required physical examination. Thinking his career and his flight pay were in jeopardy, the officer became frightened and requested help from a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services.
Upon learning that the officer had been giving himself Christian Science treatment but had lost confidence in it, the Minister worked to overcome the officer's fear and restore his confidence. At the end of a week the officer was reexamined and found to lie in excellent health. Consequently he was restored to flight status.
The officer's request to see the Minister was received by telephone at the Christian Science Service Center in San Diego, California. This center was established over thirty-five years ago by the Christian Science churches and societies of California as a result of their desire to help the large number of military personnel in the San Diego area. Through the years, the Service Center has been maintained by these churches and societies. It has been a haven of rest and refreshment, a place where those in uniform may go to read Christian Science literature, write letters, and talk with field workers of Armed Services Activities. The center is also a point where military personnel are picked up and transported to church services and lectures.
A happy relationship exists between the department of The Mother Church known as Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services and the Service Center. The two Ministers of Armed Services Activities in the San Diego area are privileged to use the center as an office and as a place to receive mail and telephone calls. Every week members of the committee that runs the Service Center go to a large Naval Training Center to assist in various ways at the Christian Science Sunday service and the informal Sunday School held there. Since nearly two hundred men attended some of these services last summer the assistance of the committee members is needed and appreciated.
