Many students of Christian Science...

Many students of Christian Science have reason to cherish the wonderful, healing exhortation contained in the following words which appear on page 393 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man."

I am happy to be able to express my gratitude for this inspiring message of our Leader and indeed for all the blessings which have come to mankind through her life and teachings.

Christian Science came to my family when I was in my late teens, and although I accepted the absolute truth of its teachings, I did little to apply them to my everyday life. However, one day about three years ago, while away from home, I suddenly became very ill. Since I was unable to help myself, I was placed under medical care, and eventually removed to hospital. There I stayed, showing no sign of physical improvement, and still in the depths of mental despondency to which error had carried me.

After I had spent about ten days in this condition, the thought came to me that to consent to lie in a hospital bed without at least making some kind of resistance to the belief of disease was not a proper course for one who would call himself a Christian Scientist. Obviously the time had come for me either to take a stand for Truth in Christian Science or to give myself over completely to materia medica.

My parents visited me daily, and the evening that I took my stand I asked my mother to bring me my copy of Science and Health. This she joyfully did and I began to read from it as often as I was able. At about this time, the doctors diagnosed my condition as a form of kidney trouble, and I was told that it would be necessary for me to undergo surgery as soon as they could arrange it.

I turned again to Science and Health, and my eyes fell upon the words, "There is no pain in Truth, and no truth in pain"' (p. 113). This inspiring statement gave me the power I needed to "rise in the strength of Spirit," and when my father came later in the day I was able to tell him that I wished to leave the hospital and rely solely upon Christian Science to accomplish my healing.

I informed the medical staff of my intention; and although anxiety was expressed, I was shown great kindness, and my release was granted harmoniously. I was able to rise and dress myself and to return to my home, where I continued my study of Science and Health, reading it in con junction with the Bible. The help of a practitioner was sought and kindly given. Four days later I was able to attend the Sunday service at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and within a matter of two to three weeks I was completely healed.

In addition to the blessing of physical healing, and of even greater significance, was the spiritual regeneration which came about at this time through my intensive search after Truth. I was led to see that my human ambitions were not entirely in accord with divine Principle, and it became quite clear that the only course open to me was to relinquish my career.

To mortal sense this was a momentous decision to make; it meant my giving up all my material aims and everything I had valued hitherto. With divine Love as my guide, however, I was able to take the step unhesitatingly, joyfully, and fearlessly. I was confident that having taken a stand for Truth, I could experience only good, and so it has proved.

Since that moment spiritual unfoldment has made my life an expression of joy and harmony. All my needs have been met abundantly, and human ambition has been replaced by a desire to serve God humbly and to know Him better. I am achieving this by following to the best of my ability the example so lovingly given by Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and by Mrs. Eddy, his disciple. —Juanito Barton, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
