My mother was interested in Christian Science...

My mother was interested in Christian Science when I was born, and I have been fortunate in being able to attend Christian Science Sunday Schools and, later, church services during most of my travels. I have cause to be very grateful for the protective and healing power of this wonderful, scientific religion.

During the Second World War, while I was serving in the Royal Navy, there were occasions when only divine protection and guidance could account for my survival and freedom from injury. I was constantly reminded of the omnipresence and omnipotence of God as Life and was grateful for the sense of love and protection which a knowledge of this basic fact afforded. I am grateful for even a small understanding of the great truths which Christian Science teaches and for the help of a practitioner at that time.

Recently I had a wonderful proof of the healing power of Science. I was master of a sail training ship. While dressing one morning I suddenly became immobilized by a sharp pain in my back and was unable to move. I lay on my back for four hours until we reached harbor. During this time I read the textbook by Mrs. Eddy and repeatedly declared the truth to myself that man, as God's reflection, is perfect and spiritual and consequently not subject to accident or immobilization.

After I had been carried ashore a doctor, who was necessarily called by the authorities concerned, said that I had "slipped a disk" and would probably lie laid up for about three months. His opinion was substantiated in hospital the following day by two other doctors, including an orthopedic specialist.

Meanwhile, I managed to get a message to my wife, who was over five hundred miles away and who asked a Christian Science practitioner to give me treatment and then came straight to the hospital. The doctors decided to take no further action until an X-ray photograph which had been arranged for the following day had been taken. My wife and I were very grateful to be left alone and to have this day in which to study and pray. I was in considerable discomfort and pain, but early the following morning I felt something move into place, and I could move without pain. The X-ray picture was taken shortly afterwards and showed no evidence of the trouble. The doctors all seemed surprised and one of them said: "Well, something has helped you. I don't know what it is."

I am indeed grateful for such a clear proof of Christian Science healing and for the splendid work of the practitioner. I am grateful also for the many other blessings which Christian Science has brought me and for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church.—(Comdr.) H. Graham D. de Chair, London, England.
