In 1923 I was examined by a physician in connection with an insurance policy. The verdict was that I had a severe condition of the heart. This was verified by our family physician, to whom I went for assurance. He said there was nothing he could do for me and that in his opinion I would not have long to live.

I had been a heavy drinker and user of tobacco; these habits caused much distress and inharmony in our home. My wife gave me an ultimatum after my indulgence at one party and told me I had to choose between staying with the family or giving up social drinking. I firmly believed that there is a God; so I went out into the garage and prayed on my knees to be helped, as I did not want to lose my home and family.

The next day a neighbor met my wife and told her about Christian Science. My wife brought home some Christian Science periodicals and obtained a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I started reading this book and the periodicals and was so inspired I read every moment I could.
