Giving Christian Science Lectures
A Christian Science lecture is one of the ways provided by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for letting our neighbors and friends know of the healing power of Truth. When branch church members look upon our lectures as opportunities to share their religion with others, they are led to prepare for them in the most intelligent and effective manner. The following instances indicate the loving thought and earnest preparation which assure healing results.
Good metaphysical support contributed to the success of the lecture given by a branch in Florida which writes: "We are especially grateful for the spiritual enlightenment and unity of purpose resulting from monthly inspirational meetings and study of assigned topics pertaining to church progress. We feel these helped greatly in preparing for our lecture. We had an overflow crowd that necessitated the providing of many additional seats. It was undoubtedly one of the largest audiences ever gathered to hear a Christian Science lecture in our city. Our greatest joy was to see some of our townspeople attend for the first time."
From a church in San Francisco comes this report: "We have given three lectures during the past year with capacity attendance. We have found that Saturday afternoon lectures bring out many who could not attend evening lectures. For the first time in several years we gave a lecture in our local theater using publicity based upon new advertising information from The Mother Church. The advertisements did not appear until the night before and the morning of the lecture. We placed large notices in two of the leading daily newspapers. The audience filled the theater to overflowing, and we have evidence that people came from some distance outside the city."
A church in Oklahoma writes: "When giving lectures we have concentrated more and more on our particular area rather than the entire city. Committees have been enlarged, and individual and specific study of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy has enabled these committees to operate more effectively. There has been noticeable growth in the thinking of our members, especially with regard to expressing more love for mankind."
Personal invitations are always appreciated. One branch in Los Angeles says: "The last three lectures have been very well attended. We invited our neighbors by going from house to house on nearby streets, offering lecture announcements with a cordial, brief invitation to attend. A woman said she had lived there for two years, and no one had invited her anywhere before. One couple said that their daughter attended a Christian Science church in a nearby city and that they would like to come to the lecture. Many of our neighbors were so gracious and enthusiastic, as if they had been waiting for an invitation to visit our church."
The time of year is not so important as the devotion of earnest thought and right expectation of good results. This was proved by another church in Oklahoma which writes: "Our first summer lecture was given last July on a Sunday afternoon and was attended by an overflow crowd. Every seat was taken, and some people stood. Our air conditioning, which had recently been installed, added to the comfort of those who attended this lecture."
Many blessings resulted from the lecture a branch in New Mexico writes about:
"Our second lecture for the year was very well attended and proved inspiring. The one introducing the lecturer had never before felt so free in speaking before a large crowd.
"A member who helped to distribute the lecture cards took some to a new motel quite a distance from town. The management agreed to put the cards in the lobby and said they would also like to have a box for our literature as they had many inquiries about Christian Science literature from travelers.
"An attendant at the lecture said that for the first time she could read without prejudice 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mrs. Eddy.
"In Matthew (13:23), our Master said: 'He that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and under-standeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.' "
