Christian Science has been important...

Christian Science has been important to me and my family for a number of years, and the children have no remembrance of relying on anything but spiritual means for healing. Therefore one summer when an inharmonious condition was observed on my daughter's feet, we immediately turned to Truth.

When school began, although the condition had not spread further, it was still present. At this point treatment in Christian Science was requested of a faithful practitioner, whose clear perception of the truth of man's relationship to God has blessed us many times. He requested that we hold steadfastly to this statement given to us in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463): "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." Treatment in Christian Science was given, and my daughter and I continued our own study.

All school students were given a foot examination prior to swimming instruction. The children were told that there was an epidemic of plantar warts at their school and that the condition was considered infectious. When my daughters feet were examined, there was evidence that she had had this condition, and she was asked if she had had it treated by a medical doctor. The evidence indicated that the condition had existed but seemed to be corrected. The child stated that she had had no medical treatment, and she was then told that this would be necessary.

We again requested treatment from the practitioner, who pointed out the importance of knowing that this false condition was not true for any of God's children. Within a few days, every evidence that such a condition had existed was removed; there was not a single remaining trace, and the child's skin was smooth and unblemished.

At the next foot check the child was again told that a doctor's certificate was required. My thought then became resentful since the children have availed themselves of the opportunity of registering as Christian Scientists at the beginning of each school year and have requested exemption from medical examination.

My attention was directed to the laws of our state as they apply to Christian Scientists. I found that in the case of infectious disease, a medical certificate could be required by the school authorities. Since the authorities' request was lawful, I had an opportunity to express love to them by permitting the examination and in this way helping to remove their fears concerning this condition. I immediately called a medical doctor and made an appointment for the child to have her feet checked, stating that she needed a certificate to verify the healing of plantar warts.

Love brought about the complete healing. On the day of the appointment, the child was informed at school that she would be permitted to participate in swimming without a medical certificate. When I called the doctor's office to try to cancel her appointment, I was told that they had been trying to locate me to cancel it as an emergency prevented the doctor's seeing her that day.

Christian Science has blessed my family more than I can say in a few words here. The understanding that God is ever-present Love has lifted me up from sorrow and shown me that "trials are proofs of God's care" (ibid., p. 66). The understanding that true substance is spiritual has provided us with an increasing sense of supply.

One of my great blessings has been class instruction from a teacher who directed thought toward putting Christian Science into action and who inspired independent study. I am sincerely grateful to God for His goodness and love and for the channels through which these reach us; for Mrs. Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science and gave us Science and Health; for our practitioners, who are ever ready to help us when needed; and for the entire Christian Science movement.—(Mrs.) Doris C. Williams, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
