I began the study of Christian Science...
I began the study of Christian Science primarily to gain a physical healing. During my fifth year of teaching in the public schools I became ill. A year's leave of absence was granted to me, and I sought the help of many physicians, but in vain. Then an X-ray picture revealed that one lung was diseased. The physician said I should move to another climate, but I did not want to do this.
A friend recommended that I try Christian Science, and I sought help through the prayers of a practitioner. There was improvement after the first treatment, but the complete healing took years of study on my part and help from the practitioner.
I joined The Mother Church and a branch church and had class instruction. As I gained more understanding of Science, better health was manifested.
One of the truths which were most helpful to me during this period is found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It reads (p. 14), "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth."
The time came when all teachers in the public schools were compelled to have their chests X-rayed. The photograph showed a healing of my left lung. After teaching for forty years I retired and am leading a very active life. I owe my health to the understanding of God which Christian Science gives us.—(Miss) Dorothy Plank, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
