I became interested in Christian Science...
I became interested in Christian Science about eight years ago and at that time began the study of the Lesson-Sermon, which is given in the Quarterly. But my study was intermittent. Then I was elected First Reader of a Christian Science Society, and the full import of the lesson came to me. I had to know and understand what I was reading in order to read properly; so I began a serious study of Science.
The protection afforded me since that time is a proof of the effectiveness of this religion. One Sunday morning I had a heart attack, but with prayerful help from my wife I overcame the difficulty and was in my place as Reader with no one else knowing what had occurred. This was over two years ago, and since then I have shoveled snow and done all the heavy work in our garden with complete ease.
One time when I was chopping wood, a piece of wood flew up and struck the glasses I was wearing, shattering the glass into one eye. The glass cut not only the eyeball but also the area around the eye. When fear was overcome by an acknowledgment of God's omnipotence, I realized the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (Science and Health, p. 463). Gradually the pieces of glass came out of my eye; in two days every piece had removed itself, and the cuts had healed.
Soon after I first began to study the lesson, the smoking and social drinking habits left me. On making application for class instruction in Christian Science, I overcame all desire for coffee and tea.
This testimony would not be complete without an expression of my gratitude for Mrs. Eddy, who gave us this wonderful and practical religion, Christian Science, and for the privilege of class instruction, which is an opportunity not to be missed.—Donald Anderson, Lake Clear Junction, New York.
