A decade and a half ago, while...
A decade and a half ago, while I was suffering from a sense of frustration and despair, God led me to visit a Christian Science Reading Room and to investigate the religion of Christian Science, which heretofore had been unknown to me. I knew at once I had found the religion that would meet my need. The librarians there patiently answered my many questions and encouraged me in my study.
At first while in the Reading Room I studied the weekly Bible Lessons, given in the Christian Science Quarterly. Then I completed the reading of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Soon I was reading Mrs. Eddy. other books at home.
Early in my study of Science I was healed of chronic asthma by studying closely Hymn No. 144 from the Christian Science Hymnal. It begins with the words,
In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe.
This was a great step forward for me, because the condition had been so severe that several injections a day had been necessary to give me any relief when I had an attack.
I realized that I needed to spiritualize my thinking to destroy the sense of loneliness and despair I had. I prayed for grace and to be delivered from judging my fellow men, from self-righteousness, resentment, and self-pity. I learned to understand that since the Father is always with each of His ideas, not one is ever alone. All His ideas are at one in Love and have the companionship of each other. After a time I regained my happiness and am now joyously pursuing my life at home and in traveling.
Two other physical healings stand out because of the chronic nature of the difficulties. One was bladder trouble. The other was a combination of constipation and indigestion. Mrs. Eddy's words on pages 427 and 428 of Science and Health, "Thought will waken from its own material declaration, 'I am dead,' to catch this trumpetword of Truth, 'There is no death, no inaction, diseased action, overaction, nor reaction,'" were particularly helpful in bringing about the healings, especially that of indigestion.
I am grateful for many other healings, some of which were immediate, and for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church. Class instruction was an illuminating experience. I am also grateful for Mrs. Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science, and for the periodicals she provided for us. Her books are indispensable.—(Mrs.) Ruby Rosenberg, Kansas City, Missouri.
