Christian Science Services on Shipboard

[Reprinted from the Christian Science Sentinel, April 18, 1959]

In previous issues of the Sentinel, attention has been drawn to the opportunity afforded Christian Scientists who travel on ocean-going liners to bring healing and comfort to others through a Christian Science church service held on shipboard.

Application for this privilege should be made to the purser of the ship. One usually finds that the purser is pleased to allot a time and place for the service and to place a notice on the bulletin boards.

The Order of Sunday Services given on page 120 of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy should be followed, and the current Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly should be read. If it is not possible, however, to arrange for a solo, Item No. 6 of the service would have to be omitted. On some of the large ships, copies of the Christian Science Hymnal can be borrowed from the ship's library.

At Item No. 5 of the Order of Sunday Services a brief statement might be made to the effect that the service is being held in accordance with the Order of Services in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and its branches, as given in the Manual. If a collection is taken, it may be considered orderly and courteous to hand the proceeds to the ship's purser with a request that it be given to a seamen's charity selected by the captain of the ship.

Wednesday evening testimony meetings are not so frequently arranged for on shipboard, but if the opportunity occurs, arrangements may be made through the purser similar to those made for the Sunday services. The Order of Wednesday Meetings, given on page 122 of the Church Manual, should be strictly adhered to.

From the Treasurer of The Mother Church

Payments of per capita tax and contributions, also changes of address, should be sent to Roy Garrett Watson, Treasurer, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Christian Science Nursing

As there is a continuing demand for Christian Science nurses, applications for admission to the Nurses Training Course given at Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatoriums are welcomed from Christian Scientists who desire a career in nursing. Those who complete this course are eligible to serve as nurses in the Field, in nursing homes, and in visiting nurse services, as well as in the Sanatoriums from time to time.

Address inquiries to Personnel Department, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
