When I was a young boy my...
When I was a young boy my mother was healed in one week of a heart condition that had been pronounced incurable by materia medica. Within a fortnight thereafter I experienced my first healing through the inspired prayerful work of my mother, the result of her own healing. A severe attack of tonsillitis was very quickly healed. I retired in great distress, but with her assurance that God would care for me, I awoke after a restful night, completely free.
Young as I was, these two demonstrations of God's power made a deep and lasting impression. From that time on, I have relied on Christian Science to solve problems of every kind. My introduction to it took place in 1905, and in the succeeding years there have been healings of influenza, dislocated joints, hernia, and other conditions too numerous to mention in this testimony.
A recent experience exemplified for me, as it had never been exemplified before, the truth and wisdom in Mrs. Eddy's statement, "Trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health, p. 66). What at first seemed to be a pimple developed into an unsightly growth, and I became very fearful. Upon consulting a Christian Science practitioner, I was very soon freed from the fear of malignity. However, the sore did not heal.
I was about to travel to California, and I was disturbed at the thought of my relatives there seeing the condition. With the continued help through prayer of the practitioner, it was revealed to me that my first loyalty was to God and the demonstration of His law to the exclusion of concern over human opinions and criticisms. The trip was made, and the family reactions were dealt with harmoniously. The appearance of the sore grew worse, but the practitioner continued working with me faithfully and confidently.
My four months' stay in California drew toward its close, and I was striving to purify my thinking on the basis of Mrs. Eddy's statement (ibid., p. 259), "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration." It was then revealed to me very clearly that there was no element of time in God's perfect creation and that, being in reality God's reflection, I was actually free from any imperfection. With this awakening to the present spiritual perfection of man in God's likeness came freedom from the thought that I had to endure discomfort while waiting for healing. Then the healing came very quickly.
I am sincerely grateful for it and for the steadfast work of the practitioner. However, I am more deeply conscious of an ever-increasing gratitude to God for the wonderful revelation of the divine presence and power in our lives as demonstrated by our beloved Master, Christ Jesus, and brought to light by our revered Leader.—B. Harrison Hedges, Massapequa, New York.
I should like to verify my husbands testimony. The promptness with which the healing followed his awakening to the present perfection of man in God's image and likeness was inspiring. I am very grateful for the many blessings which have come into my life through Christian Science. It has given me a clearer understanding of God and blessed me with guidance, protection, and healing.— (Mrs.) Harriet H. Hedges.
