When the good news of Christian Science...
When the good news of Christian Science came to me, I knew it was God's answer to my earnest prayers. I went home from the first Sunday service I attended in a Church of Christ, Scientist, filled with happiness and gratitude for the love expressed by the ushers and church members. Our son was enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School, and a dear friend showed me how to study the weekly Bible Lessons from the Quarterly.
Soon afterward I found myself in a strange city with no funds and with two people to support. But God was with us, and I clung to His promise found in Psalm 138 (verse 8), "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." One position led to another as I learned to accept any opportunity to serve. At one time I had to hold four part-time positions. Supply always came when needed, often from unexpected sources. In addition, I was able to repay a rather large debt incurred by another member of the family.
One blessing after another has come into our experience since Christian Science taught me to rely entirely on God's law of infinite good. Twice I have been protected in accidents. Once, in winter, I was riding in the front seat of a friend's car when it went out of control, skidded oil the road, and reversed its direction, coming to a stop near a concrete support. No harm was done to us or to the car, and we continued on our way, thanking God for this protection.
The other time, I started to answer the doorbell at night in an inn where I had just come to work. There were several doors in a row, and by mistake I opened the one that led to the cellar. I fell onto the stairway, picked myself up, and answered the door. It was not until later that I realized that I had been preserved from falling all the way down the stairs.
I am especially grateful for a healing that took place more recently. Every night I was awakened with an uncontrollable shaking and fever; I was in such distress that I could scarcely breathe. The thought of death came many times to tempt me, always at night. Time after time I had to mentally insist that God is man's Life, that matter does not give life to man and therefore can never take it away. I had to declare vigorously and persistently that as God's perfect, spiritual idea, man can be subject only to His harmonious government.
Because of the prayers of dear friends and a Christian Science practitioner, this condition was healed, and, what is more, I was able to carry on with my regular duties throughout the whole experience. During the working out of this problem, those of Mrs. Eddy's poems which are set to music in the Christian Science Hymnal brought comfort and inspiration without measure, and I kept in thought her words on page 380 of Science and Health, "Truth is always the victor."
An understanding of God's unfailing goodness has resulted in improved health, steady employment, a higher sense of home, friends, travel, protection, and active church membership. Today my heart is filled with gratitude and praise to God for all these rich blessings, and many more, and for our dear Leader, whose works have made Him knowable. Christian Science is here to heal and bless all mankind.—(Mrs.) Frances Richardson, Methuen, Massachusetts.
